## What it does

The skill hands your agent a set of PowerShell commands for everyday Windows Server work. It covers version and system checks, running processes and services, disk space, firewall rules, DNS client settings, plus remote sessions through `Enter-PSSession` and `Invoke-Command`.

Separate sections handle roles and features with `Get-WindowsFeature` and `Install-WindowsFeature`, IIS setup through the `WebAdministration` module — app pools, sites, bindings, certificates, virtual directories, W3C logging. For Active Directory there is forest and domain controller promotion, OUs, users and groups, account unlock, password reset, replication checks. Updates go through the `PSWindowsUpdate` module from the PowerShell Gallery.

You need an administrator account on the target server and Remote Desktop or WinRM access. The skill targets Windows Server 2019 or 2022, Desktop Experience or Server Core, with PowerShell 5.1 or newer. If WinRM is not configured, the remote examples will not run — worth checking before you rely on them.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill windows-server -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/windows-server/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/windows-server/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill windows-server -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/windows-server/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill windows-server -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/windows-server/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills windows-server
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/windows-server/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill windows-server -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path infrastructure/servers/windows-server
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/windows-server/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill windows-server -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/infrastructure/servers/windows-server/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- stand up an IIS site with an app pool and an SSL binding
- create an Active Directory user and add them to a group
- unlock a locked-out account or reset a password
- install Windows Server roles and features in one command
- check disk space and service state across several servers

## Example prompts
- Create the ProductionPool app pool and a MyApp site on 443 with a certificate
- Add user jsmith to the Engineering OU with password change at logon
- Check Active Directory replication between the domain controllers

# Windows Server Administration

Windows Server management and PowerShell automation for production workloads including IIS web hosting, Active Directory domain services, and system maintenance.

## When to Use

- Provisioning or configuring Windows Server 2019/2022 instances
- Setting up IIS websites, application pools, and bindings
- Managing Active Directory users, groups, and Group Policy
- Automating administrative tasks with PowerShell
- Reviewing Windows Event Logs for troubleshooting
- Applying and managing Windows Updates on servers

## Prerequisites

- Administrator account on the target server
- PowerShell 5.1+ (built-in) or PowerShell 7+ installed
- Remote Desktop or WinRM access configured
- Windows Server 2019 or 2022 (Desktop Experience or Server Core)

## PowerShell Administration Essentials

```powershell
# Check PowerShell version
$PSVersionTable.PSVersion
# Get system information
Get-ComputerInfo | Select-Object CsName, OsName, OsVersion, OsArchitecture
# List running processes sorted by CPU
Get-Process | Sort-Object CPU -Descending | Select-Object -First 20
# List all services and their status
Get-Service | Where-Object { $_.Status -eq 'Running' }
# Restart a service
Restart-Service -Name W3SVC -Force
# Get disk space on all drives
Get-PSDrive -PSProvider FileSystem | Select-Object Name, @{N='Used(GB)';E={[math]::Round($_.Used/1GB,2)}}, @{N='Free(GB)';E={[math]::Round($_.Free/1GB,2)}}
# Check uptime
(Get-Date) - (Get-CimInstance Win32_OperatingSystem).LastBootUpTime
# Open firewall port
New-NetFirewallRule -DisplayName "Allow HTTPS" -Direction Inbound -Protocol TCP -LocalPort 443 -Action Allow
# List firewall rules
Get-NetFirewallRule | Where-Object { $_.Enabled -eq 'True' -and $_.Direction -eq 'Inbound' } | Select-Object DisplayName, Action
# Set DNS client server addresses
Set-DnsClientServerAddress -InterfaceAlias "Ethernet" -ServerAddresses ("10.0.0.2","10.0.0.3")
# PowerShell remoting to another server
Enter-PSSession -ComputerName server02 -Credential (Get-Credential)
# Run a command on multiple remote servers
Invoke-Command -ComputerName server01,server02,server03 -ScriptBlock { Get-Service W3SVC }
```
