## What it does

The skill walks an agent through hardening Windows Server against Microsoft security baselines and CIS benchmarks. It ships PowerShell blocks for password policy via `net accounts`, account lockout, renaming the built-in administrator, disabling `Guest` and `DefaultAccount`, and configuring LAPS.

Separate sections cover Group Policy, the firewall and network protocols. SMBv1 gets disabled, SMB signing required, LLMNR, NetBIOS over TCP/IP and WDigest turned off, LSA Protection enabled, UAC configured. For domain environments it installs `SecurityPolicyDsc` and `AuditPolicyDsc` and applies a baseline through `LGPO.exe`.

You need Windows Server 2019 or later, local or domain admin rights, and PowerShell 5.1+. Domain work also needs the Group Policy Management Console, and baselines come from the Microsoft Security Compliance Toolkit. Several commands touch the registry and network protocols, so run them on a test server first: killing SMBv1 and LLMNR breaks access to older file shares and name resolution.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill windows-hardening -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/windows-hardening/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/windows-hardening/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill windows-hardening -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/windows-hardening/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill windows-hardening -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/windows-hardening/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills windows-hardening
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/windows-hardening/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill windows-hardening -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path security/hardening/windows-hardening
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/windows-hardening/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill windows-hardening -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- bring a fresh Windows Server in line with a Microsoft security baseline
- close CIS benchmark gaps before a SOC2 or PCI-DSS audit
- disable SMBv1 and require SMB signing
- set password policy and account lockout
- turn off LLMNR, NetBIOS and WDigest to stop credential theft

## Example prompts
- Run windows-hardening against this Windows Server 2022 and show me what changes
- Set password policy and account lockout per the CIS benchmark
- Disable SMBv1, LLMNR and NetBIOS over TCP/IP on this server

# Windows Hardening

Secure Windows servers following Microsoft security baselines and CIS benchmarks.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Hardening new Windows Server deployments
- Implementing CIS benchmarks or Microsoft security baselines
- Preparing for compliance audits (SOC2, PCI-DSS, HIPAA)
- Configuring security features after a security incident
- Setting up Windows Defender and advanced threat protection
- Establishing Group Policy security standards for a domain

## Prerequisites

- Windows Server 2019 or later (2022 recommended)
- Local Administrator or Domain Admin access
- PowerShell 5.1+ (built into Windows Server)
- Group Policy Management Console for domain environments
- Microsoft Security Compliance Toolkit (recommended)

## Security Baseline Deployment

```powershell
# Download and apply Microsoft Security Baseline
# Download from: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=55319
# Install Security Compliance Toolkit modules
Install-Module -Name SecurityPolicyDsc -Force
Install-Module -Name AuditPolicyDsc -Force
Install-Module -Name PSDesiredStateConfiguration -Force
# Import and apply a security baseline GPO (from Security Compliance Toolkit)
# Extract the toolkit, then:
Import-Module "$env:USERPROFILE\Downloads\SCT\LGPO.exe"
# Apply local group policy from baseline
.\LGPO.exe /g ".\GPO\{baseline-gpo-guid}"
# Export current security policy for review
secedit /export /cfg C:\SecurityAudit\current-policy.inf
```

## Account Policies

```powershell
# ============================================
# Password Policy Configuration
# ============================================
# Set password policy via net accounts
net accounts /minpwlen:14 /maxpwage:90 /minpwage:1 /uniquepw:24
# Or configure via PowerShell DSC
Configuration PasswordPolicy {
    Import-DscResource -ModuleName SecurityPolicyDsc
    Node localhost {
        AccountPolicy PasswordPolicy {
            Name                                = "PasswordPolicy"
            Minimum_Password_Length              = 14
            Maximum_Password_Age                = 90
            Minimum_Password_Age                = 1
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 8c3500538460b004 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
