## What it does

This skill guides agents through tracing corporate structures, officers, and beneficial ownership using official registries and leak databases like OpenCorporates, UK Companies House, SEC EDGAR, and ICIJ Offshore Leaks. The process prioritises searching by unique company numbers rather than trade names, because names change across mergers and rebrands while registration numbers stay fixed.

The workflow moves from pulling raw registry records and filing timelines to officer and address pivots. Instead of discarding mass registration addresses, the method inspects them for batch patterns, such as multiple entities registered on the exact same date by the same formation agent. Matches found against OpenSanctions require review rather than immediate acceptance, since transliterated name searches generate noise.

Nominee directors and offshore trusts remain legal in many jurisdictions, which means a compliant register entry can still conceal the economic owner. When ownership chains hit non-public registries or layering barriers, the skill documents the terminus and flags recurring nominee names across unrelated entities.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill who-really-owns-it -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/who-really-owns-it/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/who-really-owns-it/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill who-really-owns-it -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/who-really-owns-it/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill who-really-owns-it -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/who-really-owns-it/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install UseOSINT/Skills who-really-owns-it
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/who-really-owns-it/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill who-really-owns-it -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/UseOSINT/Skills --path skills/who-really-owns-it
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/who-really-owns-it/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill who-really-owns-it -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/UseOSINT/Skills/tree/HEAD/skills/who-really-owns-it/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- Trace ultimate beneficial owners and share capital across corporate registries
- Find all other directorships and appointments held by a specific person
- Screen corporate entities and officers against OpenSanctions
- Detect clusters of related entities sharing mass registration addresses

## Example prompts
- Trace the beneficial owners of UK company number 12345678 using Companies House filings
- Run an officer pivot on John Doe to locate his other active appointments
- Investigate this offshore holding company through the ICIJ Offshore Leaks database

# Who really owns it

Registries turn a brand into a legal entity with a number, dates, addresses, and
named people. The thing nobody tells you first: **registry structure varies
enormously by jurisdiction, and that variance is the entire game.** One country
publishes full accounts, share registers, and directors' birth dates for free.
Its neighbour publishes a name and a status code and charges for the rest. Your
research strategy is not "look up the company" — it is "work out what this
jurisdiction lets me see, then plan around the gap".

Second thing: search by **company number**, not name. The number is issued once
and persists through renames, mergers, and dissolution. The name does not.

## Triage

| What you hold | Start here | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A name, unknown jurisdiction | OpenCorporates as a cross-jurisdiction index | Finds candidate entities and tells you which registry to go to. Not the source of truth |
| A name, known jurisdiction | The national registry directly | Always richer and fresher than any aggregator |
| A company number | The issuing registry | Durable, unambiguous, no name-matching problem |
| A US-listed company | SEC EDGAR, including its full-text search across filings | Filings dwarf what any company registry holds |
| A financial-market participant | GLEIF's LEI search | LEI records include direct and ultimate parent relationships, which most registries do not |
| A person, want their companies | Officer-name search in the registry (see below) | The highest-value pivot in this skill |
| An offshore entity | ICIJ Offshore Leaks database, plus whatever the jurisdiction publishes | Often the only visibility into a closed register |
```
