## What it does

This skill guides the agent through real-time architecture with WebSockets. It focuses on `socket.io` and `socket.io-client`. Steps cover server setup, token verification during handshakes, and room isolation.

On the backend, it structures chat namespaces and notification dispatchers. For the frontend, it provides a React `useSocket` hook. The hook handles reconnection attempts and delay timers.

Both packages must be installed via npm. Without a handshake token, the server drops the socket immediately.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill websocket-realtime-builder -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/websocket-realtime-builder/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/websocket-realtime-builder/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill websocket-realtime-builder -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/websocket-realtime-builder/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill websocket-realtime-builder -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/websocket-realtime-builder/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install patricio0312rev/skills websocket-realtime-builder
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/websocket-realtime-builder/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill websocket-realtime-builder -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/patricio0312rev/skills --path backend/websocket-realtime-builder
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/websocket-realtime-builder/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill websocket-realtime-builder -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- Configure a Socket.io server with handshake token authentication
- Isolate connections into chat rooms and user-specific channels
- Implement live typing indicators and room message broadcasts
- Build a React client hook with automated reconnection handling
- Dispatch notifications to specific user IDs or entire rooms

## Example prompts
- Set up a Socket.io server with token authentication and room access checks.
- Create a React useSocket hook with reconnection logic and error handling.
- Implement a notification service that emits events to specific user IDs and rooms.

# WebSocket Realtime Builder

Build real-time applications with WebSockets and Socket.io.

## Core Workflow

1. **Choose library**: Socket.io vs native WebSocket
2. **Setup server**: Configure WebSocket server
3. **Add authentication**: Validate connections
4. **Implement rooms**: Group connections
5. **Handle events**: Define event handlers
6. **Add reconnection**: Handle disconnects gracefully

## Installation

```bash
# Server
npm install socket.io
# Client
npm install socket.io-client
```

## Server Setup

### Basic Socket.io Server

```typescript
// server.ts
import express from 'express';
import { createServer } from 'http';
import { Server, Socket } from 'socket.io';
import { verifyToken } from './auth';
const app = express();
const httpServer = createServer(app);
const io = new Server(httpServer, {
  cors: {
    origin: process.env.CLIENT_URL,
    credentials: true,
  },
  pingInterval: 25000,
  pingTimeout: 60000,
});
// Authentication middleware
io.use(async (socket, next) => {
  const token = socket.handshake.auth.token;
  if (!token) {
    return next(new Error('Authentication required'));
  }
  try {
    const user = await verifyToken(token);
    socket.data.user = user;
    next();
  } catch (err) {
    next(new Error('Invalid token'));
  }
});
io.on('connection', (socket: Socket) => {
  const user = socket.data.user;
  console.log(`User connected: ${user.id}`);
  // Join user's personal room
  socket.join(`user:${user.id}`);
  // Handle events
  socket.on('disconnect', () => {
    console.log(`User disconnected: ${user.id}`);
  });
});
httpServer.listen(3001, () => {
  console.log('Socket.io server running on port 3001');
});
export { io };
```

### Namespaces and Rooms

```typescript
// namespaces/chat.ts
import { Server, Socket } from 'socket.io';
export function setupChatNamespace(io: Server) {
  const chatNamespace = io.of('/chat');
  chatNamespace.on('connection', (socket: Socket) => {
    const user = socket.data.user;
    // Join a chat room
    socket.on('join-room', async (roomId: string) => {
      // Validate user can access this room
      const canAccess = await canAccessRoom(user.id, roomId);
      if (!canAccess) {
        socket.emit('error', { message: 'Access denied' });
        return;
      }
      socket.join(`room:${roomId}`);
      socket.to(`room:${roomId}`).emit('user-joined', {
        userId: user.id,
        name: user.name,
      });
    });
    // Leave a chat room
    socket.on('leave-room', (roomId: string) => {
      socket.leave(`room:${roomId}`);
      socket.to(`room:${roomId}`).emit('user-left', {
        userId: user.id,
      });
    });
