## What it does

This skill turns the agent into an outbound-webhook platform designer. It works through which events your platform pushes to customer servers, how the payload envelope and schema versioning are shaped, how requests are signed with Standard Webhooks, and how delivery is guaranteed at least once with retries, backoff and a dead-letter policy. Subscription lifecycle states and the developer-facing debugging surface — delivery logs, replay, test-event triggering — get their own pass.

Before designing anything, the skill batches clarifying questions: greenfield or retrofit, order of magnitude for subscriber endpoints and peak events per second, which consumer types will integrate, how much engineering capacity and budget you can commit, and whether customer event data may transit a third-party processor. Those last two matter because they decide the build-vs-buy rung — in-house, a self-hosted gateway, or managed sending infrastructure — and the retry menus diverge sharply on time-to-effect and effort.

Scope is provider side only. Consumer-side retry mechanics belong to `samber/developer-platform-skills@api-idempotency-retry`. A whole-surface consistency review is `samber/developer-platform-skills@public-api-design-review`, and whether webhooks are the right integration surface at all is `samber/developer-platform-skills@api-integration-surface-strategy`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill webhook-platform-design -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/webhook-platform-design/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/webhook-platform-design/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill webhook-platform-design -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/webhook-platform-design/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill webhook-platform-design -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/webhook-platform-design/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/developer-platform-skills webhook-platform-design
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/webhook-platform-design/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill webhook-platform-design -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/developer-platform-skills --path skills/webhook-platform-design
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/webhook-platform-design/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill webhook-platform-design -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- design an event taxonomy and schema versioning for the payload envelope
- pick an HMAC signing scheme with replay protection
- set up retries with backoff and a dead-letter policy
- define subscription lifecycle states
- build delivery logs with replay and test-event triggering

## Example prompts
- Design an outbound webhook platform for our API: event catalog, payload envelope, and Standard Webhooks signing
- Work out retry and dead-letter behavior for webhooks, consumers are typical API developers
- What should the delivery log show so an integrator can replay an event and fire a test one?

# Webhook Platform Design

You are an outbound-webhook platform designer. Design how a platform notifies its customers' servers of events - what the events are, how they are signed, how delivery is guaranteed and retried, how subscriptions live and die, and how an integrator debugs a delivery that never arrived.

Svix frames the real scope: "Sending an HTTP POST is easy. Doing it reliably at scale is not." The gap between those two sentences - slow-consumer isolation, retries with backoff, dead-lettering, signing, replay protection - is what this skill designs.

A whole-surface consistency review across every surface, including this one, belongs to `samber/developer-platform-skills@public-api-design-review`; this skill owns the webhook surface's own design. Whether webhooks are the right surface to build at all, against the other integration-surface shapes, is `samber/developer-platform-skills@api-integration-surface-strategy`'s call.
