# webgl-laser

This skill builds a fixed full-screen background with a thin vertical beam, a colored halo and smoky fog around it. Useful when a page needs a cinematic backdrop behind content.

## What it does

The skill covers one effect: a vertical beam with a white-hot core, a narrow halo in the page accent color, and soft smoke around it. The canvas sits at `position: fixed` across the viewport, takes `pointer-events: none` and stays behind the DOM, while page content moves into a higher stacking context. For the halo color the skill suggests reading `--brand-accent` with `getComputedStyle`; the shader keeps the core near white.

Inside are a vertex and fragment shader for raw WebGL plus an `initWebGLLaser` function that compiles the program, fills a buffer with two triangles and keeps `u_resolution` in sync on resize. Smoke comes from noise and fbm, the pulse is a sine over `u_time`, so there is no flicker or color cycling. A `prefers-reduced-motion` branch and a `maxDpr` cap on pixel density are included.

The skill states its own boundary: laser background only. It does not touch page layout, copy, generic hero scenes, particles or unrelated motion systems, so wiring it into a request like "build me a nice landing page" gets you a shader in the wrong place. If the file already uses another renderer, the skill advises against adding a second one and suggests folding the effect into what is there.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MengTo/Skills --skill webgl-laser -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/webgl-laser/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/webgl-laser/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MengTo/Skills --skill webgl-laser -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/webgl-laser/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MengTo/Skills --skill webgl-laser -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/webgl-laser/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install MengTo/Skills webgl-laser
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/webgl-laser/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MengTo/Skills --skill webgl-laser -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/MengTo/Skills --path agent-skills/web-design/webgl-laser
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/webgl-laser/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MengTo/Skills --skill webgl-laser -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- put a fixed laser background behind page content
- tune the beam halo to the brand accent color
- add a slow glow pulse without flicker
- layer smoke around the beam with noise and fbm
- respect prefers-reduced-motion and screen pixel density

## Example prompts
- build the WebGL laser background with the webgl-laser skill
- wire up webgl-laser and pull the halo color from --brand-accent
- check that the webgl-laser canvas does not swallow page clicks

# WebGL Laser

## Scope
- Apply only to the laser background effect.
- Use a fixed full-screen canvas behind the DOM.
- Set `pointer-events: none` on the canvas.
- Keep page content in a higher stacking context.
- Match the halo and smoke to the page's primary or strongest accent color.

## Visual Target
- Thin vertical beam: crisp white-hot inner core, narrow colored halo.
- Atmospheric smoke: soft cloudy breakup concentrated around the beam.
- Dark cinematic field: restrained, brand-colored, and readable behind content.
- Slow pulse: glow breathes gently; no aggressive flicker or color cycling.
- Light blade feel: narrow and precise, never a thick neon pillar.

## Layering

```html
<canvas class="laser-canvas" data-webgl-laser></canvas>
<main class="page-content">
  ...
</main>
```

```css
.laser-canvas {
  position: fixed;
  inset: 0;
  z-index: 0;
  width: 100vw;
  height: 100vh;
  pointer-events: none;
}
.page-content {
  position: relative;
  z-index: 1;
}
```

## Brand Color
Use the product accent as the source color. The shader keeps the core near white and derives the halo/smoke from this color.

```js
function hexToRgb01(hex) {
  const clean = hex.replace("#", "").trim();
  const value = clean.length === 3
    ? clean.split("").map((char) => char + char).join("")
    : clean;
  return [
    parseInt(value.slice(0, 2), 16) / 255,
    parseInt(value.slice(2, 4), 16) / 255,
    parseInt(value.slice(4, 6), 16) / 255,
  ];
}
const accent = getComputedStyle(document.documentElement)
  .getPropertyValue("--brand-accent")
  .trim() || "#ff4d8d";
```

## Raw WebGL Setup
Prefer raw WebGL with a full-screen quad unless the active file already uses another renderer.

```js
const laserVertexShader = `
attribute vec2 a_position;
varying vec2 v_uv;
void main() {
  v_uv = a_position * 0.5 + 0.5;
  gl_Position = vec4(a_position, 0.0, 1.0);
}
`;
const laserFragmentShader = `
precision highp float;
uniform vec2 u_resolution;
uniform float u_time;
uniform vec3 u_color;
uniform float u_xOffset;
uniform float u_coreWidth;
uniform float u_glowWidth;
uniform float u_smokeDensity;
varying vec2 v_uv;
float hash(vec2 p) {
  p = fract(p * vec2(123.34, 456.21));
  p += dot(p, p + 45.32);
  return fract(p.x * p.y);
}
float noise(vec2 p) {
  vec2 i = floor(p);
