# webflow-code-component:convert-component

Turns an existing React component into a Webflow Code Component: reads the props, writes the .webflow.tsx definition and flags what has to change.

## What it does

The skill opens the component file and pulls out its name, props interface, TypeScript types and defaults. Each prop is then matched against Webflow's type table: `string` becomes `props.Text()`, `children` becomes `props.Slot()`, booleans become `props.Boolean()`, string literal unions become `props.Variant()` with an `options` array. The result is a `.webflow.tsx` file placed next to the original.

A second pass hunts for patterns that break. React Context and `useContext` do not carry across Webflow components, so they get refactored into props or nano stores. Touching `window`, `document` or `localStorage` during render fails SSR — wrap it in `useEffect` or set `ssr: false`. Callback props are dropped, and complex objects are split into flat fields.

You need Node.js 18+, React 18+, TypeScript and `@webflow/webflow-cli`. Styled-components and Emotion get extra treatment: the skill installs the decorator packages and edits `globals.ts` plus `webflow.json`, because otherwise the styles will not survive Shadow DOM. Make sure `webflow.json` already exists in the project root — if it does not, the skill points you at local-dev-setup instead.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add webflow/webflow-skills --skill webflow-code-component:convert-component -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add webflow/webflow-skills --skill convert-component -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/convert-component/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/convert-component/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add webflow/webflow-skills --skill convert-component -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/convert-component/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add webflow/webflow-skills --skill convert-component -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/convert-component/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install webflow/webflow-skills convert-component
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/convert-component/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add webflow/webflow-skills --skill convert-component -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/webflow/webflow-skills --path plugins/webflow-skills/skills/convert-component
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/convert-component/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add webflow/webflow-skills --skill convert-component -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- map an existing React component onto Webflow prop types
- generate a `.webflow.tsx` definition from the component source
- find SSR-breaking code: `window`, `document`, `localStorage`
- split a nested object prop into flat fields
- wire up the Shadow DOM decorator for styled-components or Emotion

## Example prompts
- Convert this React component into a Webflow Code Component
- Analyze the props in `Card.tsx` and generate the `.webflow.tsx` file
- What in this component won't work in Webflow, and how do I fix it?

# Convert Component

Convert an existing React component into a Webflow Code Component by analyzing its structure and generating the appropriate `.webflow.tsx` definition file.

## When to Use This Skill

**Use when:**
- User has an existing React component they want to use in Webflow
- User asks to "convert", "adapt", or "make this work with Webflow"
- User provides a React component file and wants a Webflow definition
- User is migrating components from another React project

**Do NOT use when:**
- Creating a component from scratch (use component-scaffold)
- User just wants to understand code components (answer directly)
- Component is already a Webflow code component (use component-audit)

## Instructions

### Phase 1: Analyze Existing Component

1. **Read the React component file**: Get the full source code

2. **Extract component information**:
   - Component name (function/const name)
   - Props interface or type definition
   - Each prop's TypeScript type
   - Default values if defined
   - Whether component uses `children`

3. **Identify incompatible patterns**:

   | Pattern | Issue | Resolution |
   |---------|-------|------------|
   | React Context usage | Context doesn't work across Webflow components | Refactor to props or use nano stores |
   | `window`/`document` in render | SSR will fail | Wrap in useEffect or set `ssr: false` |
   | `localStorage`/`sessionStorage` in render | SSR will fail | Wrap in useEffect or set `ssr: false` |
   | Complex object props | Can't map to Webflow prop types | Break into individual props |
   | Function props (callbacks) | Not supported in Webflow | Remove or internalize logic |
   | `useContext` hook | Won't work across components | Use alternative state patterns |
   | External CSS imports | May not work in Shadow DOM | Import in .webflow.tsx instead |
```
