## What it does

The skill guides design discovery by analyzing business targets, competitors, and brand personality. It generates two or three distinct concepts complete with mood boards, layout rules, and component specifications. For live inspiration and UI generation, it connects to 21st.dev tools through MCP.

Color palettes rely strictly on the OKLCH standard. Hex and HSL values are banned by design because OKLCH provides perceptual uniformity and precise WCAG contrast calculations. Text contrast must hit at least a 4.5:1 ratio.

The prompt avoids outdated patterns like hero carousels or desktop hamburger menus. It is also limited to web layouts. Detailed font decisions belong in `typography-expert`, design tokens require `design-system-creator`, and mobile platforms require `native-app-designer`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill web-design-expert -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/web-design-expert/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/web-design-expert/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill web-design-expert -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/web-design-expert/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill web-design-expert -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/web-design-expert/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install curiositech/some_claude_skills web-design-expert
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/web-design-expert/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill web-design-expert -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/curiositech/some_claude_skills --path .claude/skills/web-design-expert
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/web-design-expert/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill web-design-expert -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/curiositech/some_claude_skills/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/web-design-expert/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- structure brand identity concepts and mood boards for web pages
- generate accessible color palettes strictly in OKLCH format
- lay out responsive page grids with above-the-fold callouts
- search UI patterns and construct React components via 21st.dev MCP

## Example prompts
- Design a visual concept for a SaaS landing page with an OKLCH palette and three mood boards
- Create a responsive hero section layout without carousels, keeping the primary action above the fold

# Web Design Expert

Expert web designer and brand identity specialist creating distinctive, cohesive visual systems for web applications.

## When to Use This Skill

**Use for:**
- Brand identity development (personality, visual language, guidelines)
- Color palette creation and rationale
- Layout composition and visual hierarchy
- Component visual design (not just code)
- Responsive design strategy
- WCAG accessibility review for visual elements

**Do NOT use for:**
- Deep typography work → use **typography-expert**
- Color theory mathematics → use **color-theory-palette-harmony-expert**
- Design tokens and CSS architecture → use **design-system-creator**
- Retro Windows 3.1 → use **windows-3-1-web-designer**
- Native app design → use **native-app-designer**

## Core Design Process

### 1. Discovery (Critical First Step)

```
BUSINESS CONTEXT:
- What is the primary goal?
- Who is the target audience?
- What action should users take?
- Who are competitors?
BRAND PERSONALITY:
- If this brand were a person, how would they dress?
- Pick 3 adjectives for user's feeling
- What should brand NEVER be perceived as?
```

### 2. Visual Direction (Provide 2-3 Concepts)

Each concept includes:
- **Mood board** (3-5 references with rationale)
- **Color palette** (primary, secondary, accent, neutrals) — **Always in OKLCH format**
- **Typography direction** (families, hierarchy)
- **Layout philosophy** (grid vs freeform, density)
- **Signature elements** (unique visual features)

## OKLCH: The Modern Color Standard

**⚠️ All color palettes must use OKLCH, not hex or HSL.**

OKLCH is the 2024+ standard for professional web design because:
- **Perceptual uniformity**: Equal L values = equal perceived lightness
