## What it does

Construction handover often leaves warranty paperwork scattered across separate files and contractors. The warranty-tracker skill organizes this information into a structured registry covering structural, roofing, electrical, plumbing, and other building systems.

The underlying Python implementation models records with expiration dates, contact details, exclusions, and attached certificates. It calculates whether coverage is active, expiring soon, or expired, and tracks claim records from draft submission through review to final resolution.

Running the internal logic requires Python available in the environment. Without the runtime, the agent cannot execute the tracking classes or process claims.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadrivenconstruction/DDC_Skills_for_AI_Agents_in_Construction --skill warranty-tracker -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/warranty-tracker/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/warranty-tracker/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadrivenconstruction/DDC_Skills_for_AI_Agents_in_Construction --skill warranty-tracker -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/warranty-tracker/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadrivenconstruction/DDC_Skills_for_AI_Agents_in_Construction --skill warranty-tracker -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/warranty-tracker/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install datadrivenconstruction/DDC_Skills_for_AI_Agents_in_Construction warranty-tracker
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/warranty-tracker/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadrivenconstruction/DDC_Skills_for_AI_Agents_in_Construction --skill warranty-tracker -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/datadrivenconstruction/DDC_Skills_for_AI_Agents_in_Construction --path 1_DDC_Toolkit/Closeout/warranty-tracker
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/warranty-tracker/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadrivenconstruction/DDC_Skills_for_AI_Agents_in_Construction --skill warranty-tracker -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/datadrivenconstruction/DDC_Skills_for_AI_Agents_in_Construction/tree/HEAD/1_DDC_Toolkit/Closeout/warranty-tracker/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- maintain a central registry of construction warranties across building systems
- track approaching warranty expiration dates before deadlines pass
- record and monitor warranty claim statuses through resolution
- link certificates and technical manuals directly to warranty records

## Example prompts
- Register a new contractor warranty for the ventilation system and attach the acceptance document.
- Review all warranties and list items that are expiring soon.
- Draft a warranty claim for the roof membrane defect under the active roofing warranty.

# Warranty Tracker

## Business Case

### Problem Statement
Warranty management is often neglected:
- Missing warranty documentation
- Expired warranties untracked
- Difficult to file claims
- Scattered across multiple files

### Solution
Centralized warranty tracking system that monitors expiration dates, stores documentation, and manages claims.

### Business Value
- **Cost savings** - File claims before expiration
- **Organization** - Central warranty repository
- **Compliance** - Meet handover requirements
- **Proactive** - Automatic expiration alerts
