## What it does

The skill makes the agent draft and maintain feature specs. Documents land in `.walden/specs/`, requirements follow EARS, design goes through review, and tasks sit next to executable proofs. Before anything is written, the skill inspects the request, project rules and existing contracts: it reads `.walden/constitution.md` and `.walden/lessons.md` when present, and starts from an approved `.walden/contracts.md` if one exists.

Then it picks a lane. Work that preserves or restores intended behavior stays outside a new spec-authoring cycle: existing tests run and evidence gets refreshed. Changed behavior enters authoring. When intent is unclear, the skill asks one focused question instead of producing speculative documents. Frontmatter, fingerprints and checkboxes are never hand-edited; the CLI handles state changes.

You need Walden CLI v0.10.4 or a newer compatible release. The skill does not install it: it checks `command -v walden` and `version --json`, then names a single install path and stops the dependent operation if the binary is missing. Worth knowing before you ask the agent to write a spec.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add andrearaponi/walden --skill walden -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/walden/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/walden/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add andrearaponi/walden --skill walden -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/walden/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add andrearaponi/walden --skill walden -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/walden/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install andrearaponi/walden walden
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/walden/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add andrearaponi/walden --skill walden -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/andrearaponi/walden --path skill/walden
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/walden/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add andrearaponi/walden --skill walden -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- write feature requirements in EARS form
- separate a bugfix from a behavior change
- check whether an existing spec covers new work
- refresh evidence after running tests
- turn approved tasks into an implementation plan

## Example prompts
- walden, write a spec for the new report export feature
- check whether the current spec covers this bugfix and refresh the evidence
- build an implementation plan from the approved tasks

# Walden

Author and review deliberately; delegate workflow mechanics to the CLI. Reply in the user's preferred language. The skill supplies judgment, not approval on the user's behalf.

## Entry Decision

Before creating a feature or choosing a phase, inspect the request, applicable project rules, and existing contracts. Read `.walden/constitution.md` and relevant `.walden/lessons.md` when present. When an approved `.walden/contracts.md` exists, start discovery from it: read in full only the features it identifies as related, then follow their citations as needed. Do not create a spec merely because the user mentioned Walden.

| Contract impact | Route |
| --- | --- |
| Preserve or restore intended behavior | Keep the work outside a new spec-authoring cycle, unless explicit user scope or project rules require a spec. Run existing tests and refresh applicable Walden evidence. |
| Introduce or change intended behavior | Enter authoring: requirements for a new feature, or the earliest affected phase of an existing spec. |
| Unclear | Ask a focused question about intended behavior before selecting a lane or creating speculative documents. |

A bugfix can restore an approved contract without changing it. A refactor can preserve it. Neither route bypasses tests, evidence checks, or execution authorization. An explicit request to implement a maintenance fix authorizes that work; approval of a planning document alone does not.

Before closing maintenance, identify the applicable current contract, run existing tests, and refresh the selected affected evidence with `walden verify <feature>` at the declared checkpoint. Use `--all` only for a justified forced check. Inspect the CLI outcome; raw test output alone does not refresh evidence. If no spec covers the change, state that limitation without creating a spec merely to obtain a checkbox.

For an existing portfolio, establish applicability **within the user's requested scope** before proposing adoption or replay:

| Proposed applicability | Review action |
| --- | --- |
| Current | Retain the required behavior in the selected verification scope. |
| Superseded | Cite the replacing/removing decision and successor; propose retirement, never perform it automatically. |
| Mixed | Identify surviving requirements and their agreed destination before discarding obsolete design/tasks. |
| Unresolved | Ask the specific business/scope question; do not invent conformity. |
```
