## What it does

This skill turns Well-Architected review findings into standing controls instead of a one-off assessment. You get commit-ready files: AWS Config rules, Service Control Policies, permission boundaries, CloudWatch alarms, and policy checks via CDK Aspects, cfn-guard or OPA/Sentinel. Every control cites the WA question or best practice ID it enforces and is labeled preventive (blocks the bad change) or detective (flags it after the fact).

It works in steps. First it asks for the workload name, the IaC dialect (CDK, CloudFormation, Terraform, SAM or mixed), which enforcement points you actually have (CI, AWS Organizations/SCPs, AWS Config), and which pillars to prioritize. Then it either parses a prior review and takes its High/Critical findings, or scans the IaC itself and proposes candidates. For each candidate it picks the strongest available enforcement point: a CI check, an SCP, a Config rule or an alarm.

If a control cannot run with the enforcement points you have, the skill says so rather than emitting a rule that never fires. Sample snippets inside cover YAML, TypeScript and cfn-guard syntax.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws-samples/sample-well-architected-skills-and-steering --skill wa-guardrails -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/wa-guardrails/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/wa-guardrails/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws-samples/sample-well-architected-skills-and-steering --skill wa-guardrails -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/wa-guardrails/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws-samples/sample-well-architected-skills-and-steering --skill wa-guardrails -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/wa-guardrails/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws-samples/sample-well-architected-skills-and-steering wa-guardrails
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/wa-guardrails/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws-samples/sample-well-architected-skills-and-steering --skill wa-guardrails -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws-samples/sample-well-architected-skills-and-steering --path skills/wa-guardrails
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/wa-guardrails/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws-samples/sample-well-architected-skills-and-steering --skill wa-guardrails -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws-samples/sample-well-architected-skills-and-steering/tree/HEAD/skills/wa-guardrails/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- turn Well-Architected review findings into ongoing controls
- block deployment of an S3 bucket without encryption
- fail synth on a security group open to 0.0.0.0/0 on non-web ports
- catch configuration drift on live resources with AWS Config
- enforce tagging standards through a CI check

## Example prompts
- generate guardrails for my CDK project, prioritize Security and Reliability
- take the findings from my last review and turn them into AWS Config rules and SCPs
- scan the IaC and propose controls for storage encryption and public access

# Well-Architected Guardrails

This skill generates **preventive and detective controls** that keep a workload Well-Architected over time. Unlike the assessment skills (which find gaps) or remediation (which fixes a specific finding once), guardrails codify best practices so non-compliant changes are blocked or flagged automatically — in CI, at deploy time, and continuously in the account.

**What you'll produce:** ready-to-commit control files (Config rules, SCPs, CI policy checks, alarms), each tied to the WA Question/Best Practice ID it enforces, with a note on whether the control is **preventive** (blocks the bad change) or **detective** (flags it after the fact).

## Step 1: Gather context

Ask the user (skip any already provided or inferable from the codebase):

> I can generate guardrails to keep your workload Well-Architected. Let me know:
> - **Workload name** and code packages/directories (IaC, CI/CD configs)
> - **IaC dialect**: CDK (which language), CloudFormation, Terraform, SAM, or mixed
> - **Source of controls**: a prior `/aws-well-architected-framework-review` or assessment output, specific concerns, or "scan and propose"
> - **Enforcement points available**: CI pipeline (which one), AWS Organizations/SCPs, AWS Config, account-level admin — so controls target what you can actually deploy
> - **Pillars to prioritize** (optional; default: Security and Reliability)

If you are in a codebase, proceed directly and infer the IaC dialect and CI system from the files present.
```
