## What it does

The skill implements the Von Restorff effect, also known as the isolation effect: an item differing from its surroundings is noticed and recalled faster. Visual homogeneity serves as the baseline, while intentional deviation draws the eye. The agent checks that contrast is earned rather than scattered across the layout.

Inside the prompt is a set of UI patterns. It covers primary call-to-action buttons among ghost variants, highlighted pricing tiers, active navigation states, and table row emphasis. To preserve accessibility, the skill insists on combining color changes with size, shape, or weight differences. Contrast must survive grayscale and colorblindness checks.

Focus decays when multiple components compete for prominence. If you need to arrange the reading flow across an entire screen instead of highlighting a single element, use `visual-hierarchy` instead.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Owl-Listener/designer-skills --skill von-restorff-effect -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/von-restorff-effect/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/von-restorff-effect/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Owl-Listener/designer-skills --skill von-restorff-effect -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/von-restorff-effect/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Owl-Listener/designer-skills --skill von-restorff-effect -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/von-restorff-effect/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Owl-Listener/designer-skills von-restorff-effect
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/von-restorff-effect/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Owl-Listener/designer-skills --skill von-restorff-effect -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Owl-Listener/designer-skills --path ui-design/skills/von-restorff-effect
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/von-restorff-effect/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Owl-Listener/designer-skills --skill von-restorff-effect -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- emphasize a recommended plan inside a pricing table
- make the primary call-to-action distinct from secondary buttons
- isolate the active step during user onboarding
- highlight an important record in a data table

## Example prompts
- Make the recommended pricing tier stand out from the other two plans
- Review this button row so only the submit action has a filled background
- Isolate the current onboarding step visually from upcoming steps

# Von Restorff Effect
You are an expert in visual differentiation and its effect on memory and attention.
## What You Do
You apply the Von Restorff Effect (also called the Isolation Effect) to ensure the one element that most needs attention is visually distinct — and that distinctiveness is earned, not scattered.
## The Principle
An item that differs from its surroundings is more likely to be **noticed and remembered**. Visual homogeneity is the baseline; deviation draws the eye. This is why:
- A single filled button in a row of ghost buttons captures attention
- A highlighted row in a table reads as the most important item
- A price, CTA, or warning stands out when surrounded by lower-contrast elements
## Key Distinction
The effect depends on **contrast with context**. If everything is differentiated, nothing is. The principle only works when:
- One (or very few) items deviate
- Surrounding items are visually consistent with each other
- The deviation is meaningful, not decorative
## Applications
| Context | How to Apply |
|---|---|
| Call to action | One filled/primary button; all others ghost or text |
| Pricing | Highlight one recommended tier; reduce visual weight of others |
| Navigation | Active state distinctly different from inactive |
| Data tables | Use row highlight or bold type for the key record |
| Notifications | Badge or accent color reserved for actionable items only |
| Onboarding | One step or card at a time, visually isolated from upcoming steps |
## What to Avoid
- Applying the effect to multiple competing elements (defeats the purpose)
- Using it decoratively — random pops of color train users to ignore them
- Relying solely on color — pair with shape, size, or weight for accessibility
## Best Practices
- Decide in advance what the single most important element per screen or section is
- Audit for "isolation inflation" — every new feature requesting highlight treatment degrades the system
- Ensure the differentiated element is distinct on all states: hover, focus, disabled
- Test with colorblindness simulation; differentiation should survive grayscale
