## What it does

The skill reads your real writing and converts it into rules. Not adjectives like "punchy and authentic" — those tell a writer nothing. It records how you open a paragraph, how long your sentences run, which words you never use. The output is a `voice.md` file that other skills or a human can write from.

It works in steps. First it loads `brand-profile.md` for identity and audience, then collects samples: 5–10 substantial pieces, 3 at the floor. Spoken transcripts work best because natural rhythm survives before self-editing flattens it. Analysis runs across six layers — lexicon, syntax, rhetoric, structure, stance, and negative space, meaning what the person conspicuously never does. Every pattern gets a quote from a sample behind it.

Then comes the test. The skill generates a fresh post on a new topic using only `voice.md` and puts it next to a real sample. Can you tell which is which? If not, the rules get fixed and the loop repeats once or twice. One limit worth knowing: with no usable samples the skill will not invent a voice, it routes you to the voice interview in `brand-profile`. So if you have barely written anything yet, that comes first.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill voice-builder -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/voice-builder/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/voice-builder/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill voice-builder -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/voice-builder/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill voice-builder -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/voice-builder/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install social-media-skills/skills voice-builder
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/voice-builder/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill voice-builder -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/social-media-skills/skills --path skills/voice-builder
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/voice-builder/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill voice-builder -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/social-media-skills/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/voice-builder/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build voice.md from your own posts and transcripts
- stop getting generic AI text instead of your own voice
- capture a brand voice once for the whole team
- keep a company voice and a founder voice in separate files
- check whether the author recognizes their own writing among generated text

## Example prompts
- analyze my posts and build voice.md
- build my voice guide, samples are in the samples folder
- test voice.md: write a post on a new topic and compare it with my writing

  Use to build a reusable voice guide (voice.md) by analyzing a person's or brand's ACTUAL
  writing samples — so every other social skill can write in their exact voice instead of
  generic AI prose. Run this when the user says "build my voice," "sound like me," "capture my
  tone," "analyze my writing," "train on my posts," "ghostwrite in my voice," or when content
  keeps coming out off-voice or generic. Requires real writing samples; if there are none,
  use brand-profile's voice interview instead. Works for anyone: founders, creators, executives
  who are ghostwritten, and brands. Read brand-profile first; this skill produces the deeper
  voice.md that complements it. This skill DEFINES the voice; to apply it per piece — tone
  shifts, style edits, de-AI-ing a draft — use writing-style-and-tone.

# Voice Builder

This skill turns real writing into a **reproducible voice** — a `voice.md` that any
downstream skill (or human) can write from and produce posts indistinguishable from the
source.

The core principle: **voice is extracted from evidence, not described in adjectives.**
"Punchy and authentic" is unwritable — it tells a writer nothing. "Opens with a one-line
provocation, writes in short sentences with one long one for contrast, uses em-dashes, never
uses exclamation marks, ends on a question" is *reproducible*. Your job is to convert someone's
writing into rules that specific.

## When to use this

- **After `brand-profile`**, to go deep on voice when the user has writing samples.
- When content keeps coming out generic, stiff, or "not me."
- For **ghostwriting at scale** — capture the voice once, write in it forever.

**When NOT to use this:** if there are no usable samples, don't invent a voice. Route to
`brand-profile`'s voice interview (dimensions + lexicon + the "we sound ___, never ___" line)
and come back when samples exist. A fabricated voice is worse than an honest interview.

## Step 0 — Read `brand-profile` first

Load `brand-profile.md` for identity, audience, and guardrails. `voice-builder` produces the
`voice.md` that sits alongside it. If a `voice.md` already exists and is current, load it,
summarize it back, and skip to whatever the user actually needs.

## Step 1 — Gather the right samples

Quality beats quantity. The best samples are **unmistakably the person** — pieces they're
proud of, in their natural register, that they actually wrote (not committee-edited, not
