## What it does

The skill runs in eight phases. It starts with sample collection: 5-10 pieces of peak voice, writing that misses the mark, and material from different contexts — technical, persuasive, narrative, casual. Then it asks the writer directly: which rules do you ignore, what signals a text wasn't yours, how has your style shifted.

Phase two through six break the writing down layer by layer. Sentence length and range, paragraph architecture, punctuation habits (em dashes, parentheses, ellipses), a word-choice matrix of preferred versus avoided terms, metaphor source domains, cultural references, reasoning patterns, emotional register, and how the writer positions themselves against the reader — expert, peer, learner, provocateur. Phase seven folds all of it into a guide with always/never/usually rules, sentence construction notes, banned phrases, a litmus test and red flags. Phase eight is validation: the author should be recognisable in a blind test, and guided writing shouldn't read as a performance.

The catch is the input. The skill works from your own samples, not from a ready-made profile. Without 5-10 texts across several genres there is little to compare, so the guide comes out thin. Once it's built, you paste the relevant sections into a prompt to keep the AI on voice.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill voice-analysis -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/voice-analysis/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/voice-analysis/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill voice-analysis -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/voice-analysis/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill voice-analysis -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/voice-analysis/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jwynia/agent-skills voice-analysis
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/voice-analysis/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill voice-analysis -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills --path skills/general/writing/analysis/voice-analysis
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/voice-analysis/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill voice-analysis -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- build a voice guide from your own writing
- check whether your style survives a blind test
- keep an AI writing in an established author's voice
- map which writing rules the author breaks on purpose
- list the phrases that give away a text you didn't write

## Example prompts
- Build a voice guide from these ten articles, start with phases 1-3
- Analyse my punctuation and sentence length, show me what repeats
- Check this draft against my voice guide and flag the red flags

# Voice & Tone Analysis

## Purpose

Extract and document a writer's distinctive voice patterns for consistent reproduction. Creates a "voice guide" that enables authentic writing that sounds like the source, not a generic approximation.

## Core Principle

**Capture spirit, not just mechanics.** The goal is writing that makes the source say "yes, that's me" not "I guess that's accurate."

---

## Phase 1: Sample Collection

### Gather 5-10 Examples from Each Category

**Peak Voice** - Writing they identify as "most them"

**Off-Voice** - Writing that doesn't represent them well

**Different Contexts:**
- Technical/instructional content
- Persuasive/argumentative pieces
- Narrative/storytelling
- Casual communication (emails, messages)
- Formal communication
- Emotional/vulnerable content

### Self-Report Prompts

**Rewrite Exercise:**
Ask: "Rewrite this neutral paragraph in your voice:"
> "The new policy will be implemented next month. It includes several changes to current procedures. Employees should review documentation and submit questions by the deadline."

**Rule Breaking:**
"What writing 'rules' do you consistently ignore? Why?"

**Pet Peeves:**
"What writing choices immediately signal something wasn't written by you?"

**Evolution:**
"How has your writing changed in 5 years? What stayed constant?"

---

## Phase 2: Linguistic Analysis

### Sentence Level

| Pattern | What to Track |
|---------|---------------|
| Average length | Words per sentence |
| Range | Shortest to longest |
| Fragments | Usage frequency, contexts |
| Run-ons | Tendency, intentionality |
| Opening patterns | How sentences typically start |
| Closing patterns | How sentences typically end |

### Paragraph Architecture

| Element | What to Track |
|---------|---------------|
| Average length | Sentences per paragraph |
| Topic sentences | Beginning, middle, end, absent |
| Transitions | Explicit words, implicit flow, abrupt |
| Information order | Build-up, front-load, circular |
```
