## What it does

The skill provides tools for powering VMs on or off, cloning, snapshot operations, migration, and deployment from OVA files or templates. It can also run commands inside guest systems, handle batch tasks, manage clusters, and acknowledge vCenter alarms. For investigation, it offers a cluster-health summary and drill-downs for VMs, hosts, and datastores.

Write operations pass through policy checks and audit logging, with records stored in `~/.vmware/audit.db`. Each vCenter or ESXi target needs its own password environment variable. Destructive actions require confirmation; some first return a no-write preview. Guest commands use the credentials supplied for that operation, so choose a guest account with limited privileges. For general read-only inventory and VM details, use `vmware-monitor`; `vmware-pilot` handles multi-step workflows.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add vmware-skills/VMware-AIops --skill vmware-aiops -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/vmware-aiops/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/vmware-aiops/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add vmware-skills/VMware-AIops --skill vmware-aiops -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/vmware-aiops/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add vmware-skills/VMware-AIops --skill vmware-aiops -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/vmware-aiops/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install vmware-skills/VMware-AIops vmware-aiops
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/vmware-aiops/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add vmware-skills/VMware-AIops --skill vmware-aiops -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/vmware-skills/VMware-AIops --path skills/vmware-aiops
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/vmware-aiops/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add vmware-skills/VMware-AIops --skill vmware-aiops -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- power a VMware VM on or off
- clone a VM or deploy from an OVA file
- create a snapshot or migrate a VM
- run a command inside a guest system
- check cluster health and review vCenter alarms

## Example prompts
- Power on the `app-server` VM in vSphere.
- Deploy a VM from an OVA file and check the cluster health.
- Review vCenter alarms and identify what needs attention.

  Use this skill whenever the user needs to manage VMs in VMware/vSphere/ESXi — it's the entry point for all VM operations.
  Directly handles: power on/off, clone, snapshot, migrate, deploy from OVA or templates, run commands inside VMs, batch operations, cluster management, vCenter alarm acknowledgment, a one-glance cluster-health triage ("is anything on fire?"), and VM/host/datastore investigation drill-downs.
  Always use this skill for any "power on", "clone", "deploy", "migrate", "batch", "guest exec", "alarm", or VM lifecycle task, and for triage like "is anything on fire" / "what needs attention now" / "investigate this VM", when the context is explicitly VMware, vSphere, or ESXi.
  Do NOT use for general read-only queries (inventory/events/VM details — use vmware-monitor), NSX networking (use vmware-nsx), storage/iSCSI/vSAN (use vmware-storage), or Kubernetes cluster lifecycle (use vmware-vks).
  For multi-step workflows use vmware-pilot. For load balancing/AVI/AKO use vmware-avi.
