## What it does

The skill standardizes test directories inside `src/app/api/__tests__/`, `src/components/__tests__/`, and `src/lib/__tests__/`. Test files use `.test.ts` or `.test.tsx` extensions. The setup relies on `vitest.config.ts`, a `jsdom` environment, `src/test/setup.ts`, and the `v8` coverage provider.

It includes code examples for testing Next.js route handlers and isolating database calls. Component recipes pair `@testing-library/react` with `userEvent`. Clocks freeze via `vi.useFakeTimers`. There is also a stub pattern for `@anthropic-ai/sdk`.

These patterns do not cover end-to-end testing in a real browser. Use Playwright for that. Running `npm test` directly requires execution permissions for `npm` and `npx` in the environment.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill vitest-testing-patterns -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/vitest-testing-patterns/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/vitest-testing-patterns/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill vitest-testing-patterns -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/vitest-testing-patterns/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill vitest-testing-patterns -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/vitest-testing-patterns/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install curiositech/some_claude_skills vitest-testing-patterns
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/vitest-testing-patterns/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill vitest-testing-patterns -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/curiositech/some_claude_skills --path .claude/skills/vitest-testing-patterns
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/vitest-testing-patterns/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill vitest-testing-patterns -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- write API route tests with mocked database calls and auth sessions
- verify React component behaviors using userEvent and waitFor
- isolate third-party SDKs using vi.mock
- test helper functions with frozen system time

## Example prompts
- Write a component test for FeatureComponent checking the loading spinner and submission handler
- Create unit tests for the GET endpoint in app/api/feature with a mocked auth session
- Test the formatDate utility by freezing the system clock with vi.useFakeTimers

# Vitest Testing Patterns

This skill helps you write effective tests using Vitest and React Testing Library following project conventions.

## When to Use

✅ **USE this skill for:**
- Writing unit tests for utilities and functions
- Creating component tests with React Testing Library
- Setting up mocks for API calls, databases, or external services
- Integration testing patterns
- Understanding test coverage and CI setup

❌ **DO NOT use for:**
- Jest-specific patterns → similar but check Jest docs for differences
- End-to-end testing → use Playwright or Cypress skills
- Performance testing → use dedicated performance tools
- API contract testing → use OpenAPI/Pact patterns

## Test Infrastructure

**Configuration**: `vitest.config.ts`
- Environment: jsdom
- Setup file: `src/test/setup.ts`
- Coverage: v8 provider

**Commands**:
```bash
npm test              # Watch mode
npm run test:run      # Single run
npm run test:coverage # With coverage
```

## File Organization

```
src/
├── app/api/__tests__/        # API route tests
├── components/__tests__/     # Component tests
├── lib/__tests__/            # Library/utility tests
└── lib/{feature}/__tests__/  # Feature-specific tests
```

Name tests as `{name}.test.ts` or `{name}.test.tsx`.

## Core Testing Patterns

### 1. API Route Tests

```typescript
import { describe, it, expect, vi, beforeEach } from 'vitest';
import { GET, POST } from '../route';
import { NextRequest } from 'next/server';
// Mock dependencies
vi.mock('@/lib/auth', () => ({
  getSession: vi.fn(),
}));
vi.mock('@/db', () => ({
  db: {
    select: vi.fn().mockReturnThis(),
    from: vi.fn().mockReturnThis(),
    where: vi.fn().mockResolvedValue([]),
  },
}));
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 1e99890f1d98292c tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
