## What it does

The skill covers shrinking bundle size and speeding up builds in Vite + React projects. Patterns are ordered by impact: drop barrel imports first, then split chunks manually, add dynamic imports per route, lazy-load heavy components, and defer third-party scripts.

You get ready config snippets. For barrel imports it points to `vite-plugin-barrel`, which rewrites them into direct imports at build time. For chunking there is a `manualChunks` block in `vite.config.ts` with separate groups for React, the router, the data layer and UI. For routes, `React.lazy()` plus `Suspense`. Diagnosis is meant to start with `npx vite-bundle-visualizer`.

The patterns assume Vite + React, so keep that in mind: on another bundler or without React you will be rewriting the examples. The section on external scripts cuts off mid-sentence, so there is no complete recipe for that part.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill vite-bundle-optimization -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/vite-bundle-optimization/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/vite-bundle-optimization/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill vite-bundle-optimization -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/vite-bundle-optimization/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill vite-bundle-optimization -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/vite-bundle-optimization/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PatternsDev/skills vite-bundle-optimization
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/vite-bundle-optimization/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill vite-bundle-optimization -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PatternsDev/skills --path javascript/vite-bundle-optimization
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/vite-bundle-optimization/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill vite-bundle-optimization -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/PatternsDev/skills/tree/HEAD/javascript/vite-bundle-optimization/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- shrink bundle size in a Vite + React project
- split vendor code into separate chunks for caching
- add lazy route loading with `React.lazy()`
- defer analytics and Sentry init until the browser is idle
- track down a slow dev server startup

## Example prompts
- Analyze bundle size with `npx vite-bundle-visualizer` and suggest what to split into chunks
- Set up `manualChunks` in `vite.config.ts` so app code stops busting the vendor cache
- Switch `lucide-react` icon imports to direct ones and wire up `vite-plugin-barrel`

# Vite Bundle Optimization

## Table of Contents

- [When to Use](#when-to-use)
- [Instructions](#instructions)

Production-ready patterns for optimizing bundle size and build performance in Vite + React applications. These patterns leverage Vite's architecture (native ESM in dev, Rollup in production) to deliver smaller, faster bundles.

## When to Use

Reference these patterns when:
- Setting up a new Vite + React project for production
- Analyzing bundle size with `npx vite-bundle-visualizer`
- Build times are slow or bundles are unexpectedly large
- Migrating from webpack/CRA to Vite
- Optimizing Core Web Vitals (LCP, FID/INP, CLS)

## Instructions

- Apply these patterns during project setup, build configuration, and bundle size reviews. When you see large bundles or slow builds, diagnose with `npx vite-bundle-visualizer` and apply the relevant pattern.

## Details

### Overview

Vite uses esbuild for dependency pre-bundling and development transforms, and Rollup for production builds. Understanding this dual architecture is key to optimizing effectively. The patterns below are ordered by impact.

---

### 1. Avoid Barrel File Imports

**Impact: CRITICAL** — Can add 200-800ms to startup and 2-4s to dev server boot.

Barrel files (`index.ts` that re-export from many modules) force bundlers to load the entire module graph even when you only use one export. This is the #1 bundle size issue in React apps.

**Avoid — imports entire library through barrel:**

```tsx
import { Button, TextField } from '@/components'
// Loads ALL components in the barrel, even unused ones
import { Check, X, Menu } from 'lucide-react'
// Loads all 1,500+ icons (~2.8s in dev)
```

**Prefer — direct imports:**

```tsx
import { Button } from '@/components/Button'
import { TextField } from '@/components/TextField'
import Check from 'lucide-react/dist/esm/icons/check'
import X from 'lucide-react/dist/esm/icons/x'
import Menu from 'lucide-react/dist/esm/icons/menu'
```

**Auto-fix with `vite-plugin-barrel`:**

```typescript
// vite.config.ts
import barrel from 'vite-plugin-barrel'
export default defineConfig({
  plugins: [
    react(),
    barrel({
      packages: ['lucide-react', '@mui/material', '@mui/icons-material'],
    }),
  ],
})
```
