# visual-testing

A skill for visual regression testing: it compares screenshots against approved baselines and flags pixel-level differences that functional tests miss.

## What it does

A button that works and clicks fine but renders at 2px height passes `toBeVisible()` and `click()`. This skill covers that gap: it walks through screenshot comparison against approved baselines using Playwright's built-in `toHaveScreenshot`, plus Chromatic, Percy and Argos CI.

Inside are baseline management, diff threshold tuning, dynamic content masking and responsive viewport checks. Review and approval workflows get their own section, because the screenshot is the evidence, not the test result — expected, actual and diff images belong in CI artifacts. On thresholds, the advice is to start strict with zero tolerance, then loosen per component and write down why each value was chosen.

Dynamic content is the main source of false positives. Dates, avatars, ads and random IDs produce differences that are not regressions, so mask or freeze them first. A suite with frequent false positives stops getting read. With the built-in comparator, baselines live in your repo, which means git history growth and LFS are on you; hosted tools keep artifacts off-repo for a subscription.

## Requirements
- Works with: Playwright

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill visual-testing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/visual-testing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/visual-testing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill visual-testing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/visual-testing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill visual-testing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/visual-testing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install petrkindlmann/qa-skills visual-testing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/visual-testing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill visual-testing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills --path skills/visual-testing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/visual-testing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill visual-testing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/visual-testing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- catch a visual regression that functional tests miss
- compare a page screenshot against an approved baseline
- set a diff threshold for one specific component
- mask dates and avatars to kill false positives
- upload expected, actual and diff images as CI artifacts

## Example prompts
- add a visual test for the dashboard page with toHaveScreenshot
- screenshots keep failing on avatars and timestamps — mask the dynamic content
- set up checks for desktop and mobile viewports

  Implement visual regression testing with Playwright screenshots, Chromatic, Percy,

  masking, responsive viewport testing, and review/approval workflows.
  Use when: "visual test," "screenshot," "visual regression," "pixel diff," "snapshot diff,"
  "update baselines," "Chromatic," "percy snapshot," "argos screenshot."
  Not for: bulk baseline regeneration after a redesign broke many tests — use
  selector-drift-recovery; cross-browser rendering matrices — use cross-browser-testing;
  general Playwright test structure — use playwright-automation.

Catch visual regressions that functional tests miss. A button that works perfectly but renders at 2px height passes `toBeVisible()` and `click()` — visual testing compares screenshots against approved baselines and flags pixel-level differences. ## Quick Route

| Situation | Go to |
|-----------|-------|
| Just need pixel diffs in CI, no review SaaS | Playwright Visual Comparisons (below) |
| Storybook in the repo | Dedicated Tools → Chromatic, or recipes.md "Storybook without Chromatic" |
| Need a hosted review/approval UI + AI diff triage | Dedicated Visual Testing Tools |
| Screenshots flake on timestamps/avatars/ads | Masking & Freezing Dynamic Content |
| Baselines bloating git history | Baseline Management → Git LFS |

## Discovery Questions

Check `.agents/qa-project-context.md` first — if it exists, use it and skip anything answered there.

### Tool selection
- **Playwright built-in or dedicated tool?** `toHaveScreenshot` is free, stores baselines in-repo (git/LFS cost is on you). Dedicated tools (Chromatic, Percy, Argos) store artifacts off-repo, add review workflows, browser farms, historical tracking, and — since late 2025 — AI diff triage. Choose on team size, review needs, and whether you want artifacts in your repo or theirs.
- **Storybook in the project?** If yes, Chromatic is the natural fit (every story becomes a visual test) — but you can also drive stories with Playwright without paying (see recipes.md). If no Storybook, Playwright built-in or Percy.
