# vision-multimodal

A skill with ready-made Python patterns for image, screenshot and PDF analysis through the Anthropic API. Handy when the agent has to read a UI mockup or pull a table out of a scan.

## What it does

The skill activates on vision, image, screenshot, pdf, ocr and visual. Inside are Python patterns for a single image, fetching one by URL, comparing several images, few-shot examples, and PDF handling through the Files API. Each pattern shows how to base64-encode the file and build the content block for `client.messages.create`.

There is a prompt section too: role assignment, step-by-step reasoning before the answer, JSON output. The `optimize_for_claude` helper uses Pillow to shrink an image to 1568 px on the long side, which cuts token spend. Size rules are spelled out: 200 px minimum, 1000x1000 optimal, 8000x8000 maximum.

The skill tells you not to expect clean OCR on handwriting and notes that only the first frame of an animated GIF gets read. It cannot identify specific individuals. One dependency is listed, `llm-integration`, so some examples will not work without it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TheLobbi/claude --skill vision-multimodal -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/vision-multimodal/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/vision-multimodal/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TheLobbi/claude --skill vision-multimodal -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/vision-multimodal/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TheLobbi/claude --skill vision-multimodal -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/vision-multimodal/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install TheLobbi/claude vision-multimodal
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/vision-multimodal/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TheLobbi/claude --skill vision-multimodal -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/TheLobbi/claude --path .claude/skills/vision-multimodal
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/vision-multimodal/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TheLobbi/claude --skill vision-multimodal -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/TheLobbi/claude/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/vision-multimodal/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pull text out of a screenshot or scan
- compare two images and list the differences
- turn a table in an image into markdown
- shrink photos before sending them to the model
- get structured JSON out of a receipt

## Example prompts
- analyze `dashboard.png` and describe what is happening on screen
- compare `before.jpg` and `after.jpg` and list the differences
- extract the table from this image and return it as markdown

# Vision & Multimodal Skill

Leverage Claude's vision capabilities for image analysis, document processing, and multimodal understanding.

## When to Use This Skill

- Image analysis and description
- Document/PDF processing
- Screenshot analysis
- OCR-like text extraction
- Visual comparison
- Chart and diagram interpretation

## Supported Formats

| Format | Status | Best For |
|--------|--------|----------|
| JPEG | ✓ | Photos, natural scenes |
| PNG | ✓ | Screenshots, UI, text |
| GIF | ✓ | Animated (first frame) |
| WebP | ✓ | Modern, compressed |
| PDF | ✓ | Documents (via Files API) |

## Image Size Guidelines

- **Minimum:** 200 pixels (smaller = reduced accuracy)
- **Optimal:** 1000x1000 pixels
- **Maximum:** 8000x8000 pixels
- **Token cost:** ~(width × height) / 1000
- **Tip:** Resize to 1568px max dimension for 30-50% token savings

## Core Patterns

### Pattern 1: Single Image Analysis

```python
import anthropic
import base64
client = anthropic.Anthropic()
# Load and encode image
with open("image.jpg", "rb") as f:
    image_data = base64.standard_b64encode(f.read()).decode("utf-8")
response = client.messages.create(
    model="claude-sonnet-5",
    max_tokens=1024,
    messages=[{
        "role": "user",
        "content": [
            {
                "type": "image",
                "source": {
                    "type": "base64",
                    "media_type": "image/jpeg",
                    "data": image_data
                }
            },
            {
                "type": "text",
                "text": "Describe this image in detail."
            }
        ]
    }]
)
```

### Pattern 2: Image from URL

```python
import httpx
# Fetch and encode from URL
image_url = "https://example.com/image.jpg"
response = httpx.get(image_url)
image_data = base64.standard_b64encode(response.content).decode("utf-8")
# Then use same pattern as above
```

### Pattern 3: Multiple Images

```python
# Compare multiple images (up to 100 per request)
messages = [{
    "role": "user",
    "content": [
        {"type": "image", "source": {"type": "base64", "media_type": "image/jpeg", "data": image1}},
        {"type": "image", "source": {"type": "base64", "media_type": "image/jpeg", "data": image2}},
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 98505faf0c150888 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
