# videodb

Gives the agent sight and hearing on video: indexes speech and scenes, finds moments with timestamps, cuts clips, edits the timeline and watches RTSP feeds.

## What it does

The skill wires the VideoDB SDK into the agent. A local file, a public link or an RTSP feed goes into a collection, and you get back a stream link that plays. Over that video you run analyzers: speech, scene descriptions, objects, OCR, brands, activity. Their output becomes indexes, so you can search for moments, ask a question about the footage and filter results that carry timestamps and evidence links.

Editing happens through timeline operations: subtitles with translation and burn-in, text and image overlays, background music, voiceover. A separate piece records the desktop with screen, mic and system audio, then produces a session summary and alerts driven by what is said or shown.

You need `VIDEO_DB_API_KEY`. `videodb.connect()` looks for it in the environment or in the project's `.env`, which is why Python runs from the project directory. Take the SDK with the capture extra; if that extra fails to build on Linux, install it without. The `>=0.5.0` pin is not cosmetic: understand, index, ask and aggregate only exist from that version. A run where an analyzer failed or was skipped stays `partial`, and `wait_until_complete()` keeps polling into a `TimeoutError`, so poll the analyzers yourself.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add video-db/skills --skill videodb -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add video-db/skills --skill python -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/python/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/python/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add video-db/skills --skill python -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/python/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add video-db/skills --skill python -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/python/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install video-db/skills python
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/python/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add video-db/skills --skill python -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/video-db/skills --path python
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/python/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add video-db/skills --skill python -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/video-db/skills/tree/HEAD/python/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- locate every scene with people in a long recording and get timestamps
- get a working playable stream link for an uploaded video
- generate subtitles, translate them and burn them into the frame
- raise an alert when someone walks into an RTSP camera zone
- record a desktop session and get a summary with a timeline

## Example prompts
- Ingest this file into VideoDB and give me a stream link.
- Index this folder, find every scene with people and return the timestamps.
- Generate subtitles, burn them in and add quiet background music.

# VideoDB Skill

**Perception + memory + actions for video, live streams, and desktop sessions.**

Use this skill when you need to:

## 1) Desktop Perception
- Start/stop a **desktop session** capturing **screen, mic, and system audio**
- Stream **live context** and store **episodic session memory**
- Run **real-time alerts/triggers** on what’s spoken and what's happening on screen
- Produce **session summaries**, a searchable timeline, and **playable evidence links**

## 2) Video ingest + stream
- Ingest a **file or URL** and return a **playable web stream link**
- Transcode/normalize: **codec, bitrate, fps, resolution, aspect ratio**

## 3) Understand + index + retrieve (timestamps + evidence)
- **Understand**: run analyzers over speech, scenes, objects, OCR, brands, activity
- **Index**: turn analyzer artifacts into semantic, filterable, and aggregatable indexes
- **Retrieve**: search moments, ask questions, filter exactly, count and group — with **timestamps** and **playable evidence**
- Auto-create **clips** from results

## 4) Timeline editing + generation
- Subtitles: **generate**, **translate**, **burn-in**
- Overlays: **text/image/branding**, motion captions
- Audio: **background music**, **voiceover**, **dubbing**
- Programmatic composition and exports via **timeline operations**

## 5) Live streams (RTSP) + monitoring
- Connect **RTSP/live feeds**
- Run **real-time visual and spoken understanding** and emit **events/alerts** for monitoring workflows

---

## Common inputs
- Local **file path**, public **URL**, or **RTSP URL**
- Desktop capture request: **start / stop / summarize session**
- Desired operations: get context for understanding, transcode spec, index spec, search query, clip ranges, timeline edits, alert rules

## Common outputs
