## What it does

The skill runs `scripts/compare.py`, which pulls metadata from both files (codec, resolution, bitrate, duration, file size), computes PSNR and SSIM, and writes `comparison.html`. The report has three viewing modes: slider, side-by-side, and grid, with zoom from 50% to 200%. It is self-contained — frames are embedded as base64, so no server is needed and it works offline.

Frames are sampled at 5-second intervals by default and scaled to a consistent 800px height. Change the interval with `--interval`, the output name with `-o`. There is a batch loop for running a whole folder through.

FFmpeg and FFprobe are required, along with Python 3.8+. The script checks for them and fails with a clear message when something is missing. Each video is capped at 500MB; over that, compress the file first or edit `MAX_FILE_SIZE_MB` in `scripts/compare.py`. If the two videos differ in length, the script truncates the comparison to the shorter frame count and warns you.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill video-comparer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/video-comparer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/video-comparer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill video-comparer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/video-comparer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill video-comparer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/video-comparer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install daymade/claude-code-skills video-comparer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/video-comparer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill video-comparer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/daymade/claude-code-skills --path video-comparer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/video-comparer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill video-comparer -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/daymade/claude-code-skills/tree/HEAD/video-comparer/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- compare an original video against its compressed version
- measure PSNR and SSIM after re-encoding
- see how bitrate changes affect the picture
- produce an HTML report with frame-by-frame comparison
- run a batch check over a folder of videos

## Example prompts
- Compare original.mp4 and compressed.mp4 and show me the report
- Calculate PSNR and SSIM for these two videos
- Run the comparison with a 10 second frame interval

# Video Comparer

## Overview

Compare two videos and generate an interactive HTML report analyzing compression results. The script extracts video metadata, calculates quality metrics (PSNR, SSIM), and creates frame-by-frame visual comparisons with three viewing modes: slider, side-by-side, and grid.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Comparing original and compressed videos
- Analyzing video compression quality and efficiency
- Evaluating codec performance or bitrate reduction impact
- Users mention "compare videos", "video quality", "compression analysis", or "before/after compression"

## Core Usage

### Basic Command

```bash
python3 scripts/compare.py original.mp4 compressed.mp4
```

Generates `comparison.html` with:
- Video parameters (codec, resolution, bitrate, duration, file size)
- Quality metrics (PSNR, SSIM, size/bitrate reduction percentages)
- Frame-by-frame comparison (default: frames at 5s intervals)

### Command Options

```bash
# Custom output file
python3 scripts/compare.py original.mp4 compressed.mp4 -o report.html
# Custom frame interval (larger = fewer frames, faster processing)
python3 scripts/compare.py original.mp4 compressed.mp4 --interval 10
# Batch comparison
for original in originals/*.mp4; do
    compressed="compressed/$(basename "$original")"
    output="reports/$(basename "$original" .mp4).html"
    python3 scripts/compare.py "$original" "$compressed" -o "$output"
done
```

## Requirements

### System Dependencies

**FFmpeg and FFprobe** (required for video analysis and frame extraction):

```bash
# macOS
brew install ffmpeg
# Ubuntu/Debian
sudo apt update && sudo apt install ffmpeg
# Windows
# Download from https://ffmpeg.org/download.html
# Or use: winget install ffmpeg
```

**Python 3.8+** (uses type hints, f-strings, pathlib)

### Video Specifications

- **Supported formats:** `.mp4` (recommended), `.mov`, `.avi`, `.mkv`, `.webm`
- **File size limit:** 500MB per video (configurable)
- **Processing time:** ~1-2 minutes for typical videos; varies by duration and frame interval

## Script Behavior

### Automatic Validation

The script automatically validates:
- FFmpeg/FFprobe installation and availability
- File existence, extensions, and size limits
- Path security (prevents directory traversal)

Clear error messages with resolution guidance appear when validation fails.
