## What it does

The skill kicks in once the agent has changed something, and it refuses to take the code on trust. First it looks through the terminals to see whether a dev server is already up. If not, `npm run dev` goes to the background and the agent polls until the ready message with the localhost URL shows up.

Then the app opens in a side browser next to your code, screenshot included. Three checks follow: console messages, network requests, and a look at the screenshot. Errors get flagged; deprecation warnings are worth noting but do not block. Responses in the 4xx and 5xx range, failed fetches and CORS problems all count as failures. Changed a specific route? The agent navigates there and repeats the checks.

For forms and buttons it takes a page snapshot to grab element refs, then clicks, fills or hovers and screenshots the result. You end up with a verdict: the page renders, no console errors, requests healthy — or a list of what broke. One caveat: the side-browser steps assume Cursor's built-in browser, so in other agents that part may not work. SSR apps get checked twice, on the server-rendered HTML and after hydration.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills --skill verifying-in-browser -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/verifying-in-browser/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/verifying-in-browser/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills --skill verifying-in-browser -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/verifying-in-browser/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills --skill verifying-in-browser -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/verifying-in-browser/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills verifying-in-browser
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/verifying-in-browser/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills --skill verifying-in-browser -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills --path resources/verifying-in-browser
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/verifying-in-browser/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills --skill verifying-in-browser -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills/tree/HEAD/resources/verifying-in-browser/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- confirm a component actually renders after edits
- catch console errors before committing
- spot failed requests and CORS on a changed route
- test a form or button you just modified
- run a final sanity check before commit

## Example prompts
- Verify my changes in the browser: start the dev server and open the app
- I fixed the login form — check console and network for me
- Open /dashboard in the side browser and tell me if it renders

# Verify in Browser

Use this skill proactively after making code changes to verify the app actually works. Don't just trust that the code is correct — launch it and check.

## Steps

1. **Start the dev server in the background** — check if one is already running by listing terminals. If not:

   ```bash
   npm run dev
   ```

   Set `block_until_ms: 0` to run it in the background. Then poll until you see the "ready" message with the localhost URL.

2. **Open in the side browser** — launch the app beside your code:

   ```
   Tool: browser_navigate
   Arguments: { "url": "http://localhost:3000", "position": "side", "take_screenshot_afterwards": true }
   ```

3. **Quick health check** — run these three checks:

   **Console errors:**
   ```
   Tool: browser_console_messages
   ```
   Flag any errors. Warnings about deprecations can be noted but aren't blockers.

   **Network failures:**
   ```
   Tool: browser_network_requests
   ```
   Flag any 4xx/5xx responses, failed fetches, or CORS errors.

   **Visual check:**
   Review the screenshot. Does the page render? Is the layout correct? Are there any blank screens or loading spinners that never resolve?

4. **Navigate to the changed page** — if your changes are on a specific route, navigate there and repeat the checks.

5. **Test interactions** — if you changed a form, button, or interactive element:
   - Take a `browser_snapshot` to get element refs
   - Click, fill, or hover on the changed elements
   - Take another screenshot to verify the result

6. **Report the verdict** — tell the user:
   - "Verified in browser — page renders correctly, no console errors, all network requests healthy."
   - Or: "Found issues: [list of problems]"

## When to Use This

- After changing any React component, CSS, or layout code
- After modifying API routes or data fetching
- After updating environment variables or configuration
- After installing or removing dependencies
- Before committing — as a final sanity check

## Notes

- Use `position: "side"` to see code and browser at the same time.
- If the dev server is already running, skip step 1 and go straight to navigating.
