# verify-ssi

This skill walks the agent through verifying that Single Step Instrumentation actually instruments pods and that the tracer reports telemetry. Run it after enable-ssi.

## What it does

The skill checks SSI on Kubernetes in three steps. First it looks for the `datadog-lib-<language>-init` and `datadog-init-apm-inject` init containers in the pod spec. Then it searches `pup apm services list` for the service with `isTraced: true`. Step 3 runs only when `ddTraceConfigs` was set during `enable-ssi` — it compares the pod's environment variables against the `DatadogAgent` manifest.

Before any step, the agent resolves `CLUSTER_NAME`, `ENV` and `SERVICE_NAME`. Concrete values are required; the skill will not start otherwise. You also need `pup-cli`: the skill checks `pup --version`, installs it via `brew tap datadog-labs/pack` and `brew install pup` if missing, then authenticates with `pup auth login --site <DD_SITE>`. No browser available? There is a fallback with `export DD_APP_KEY=<your-app-key>`.

Pods are where this usually breaks. Skip the restart after enabling SSI and the init containers never appear, so Step 1 fails. Another catch: SSI never overwrites a variable the Deployment sets itself, so a mismatched value means removing it from the Deployment or aligning it. Once every check passes, the skill moves on to `onboarding-summary` on its own.

## Requirements
- Works with: Kubernetes

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadog-labs/agent-skills --skill verify-ssi -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/verify-ssi/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/verify-ssi/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadog-labs/agent-skills --skill verify-ssi -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/verify-ssi/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadog-labs/agent-skills --skill verify-ssi -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/verify-ssi/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install datadog-labs/agent-skills verify-ssi
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/verify-ssi/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadog-labs/agent-skills --skill verify-ssi -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/datadog-labs/agent-skills --path dd-apm/k8s-ssi/verify-ssi
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/verify-ssi/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadog-labs/agent-skills --skill verify-ssi -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/datadog-labs/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/dd-apm/k8s-ssi/verify-ssi/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- confirm SSI init containers landed in the pods
- find the service in the tracing list and check isTraced
- compare ddTraceConfigs env vars in a pod against the DatadogAgent manifest
- tell an un-restarted pod apart from a non-matching target
- send test traffic when the service never shows up

## Example prompts
- verify SSI is working in my cluster
- the pod is up but the service is missing from tracing — dig in
- check the pod env against the agent manifest for ddTraceConfigs

# Verify APM SSI on Kubernetes

> **Before doing anything else:** Fully resolve all variables in `## Context to resolve before acting`. Do not begin Step 1 until every variable has a concrete value.

## Triggers

Invoke this skill when the user expresses intent to:
- Confirm SSI is working after enabling APM
- Check whether pods are being instrumented
- Verify the tracer is running and reporting telemetry
- Confirm tracer config is applied correctly

Do NOT invoke this skill if:
- SSI has not been enabled yet — run `enable-ssi` first
- Pods are not being instrumented at all — use `troubleshoot-ssi`

---

## Prerequisites

- [ ] `enable-ssi` is complete
- [ ] Application pods have been restarted since SSI was enabled

### pup-cli: check, install, and authenticate

### Claude runs

```bash
pup --version
```

If not found:

### Claude runs

```bash
brew tap datadog-labs/pack
brew install pup
```

Check auth:
```bash
pup auth status --site <DD_SITE>
```

If not authenticated:

### Claude runs

```bash
pup auth login --site <DD_SITE>
```

> This opens a browser tab for OAuth. Complete the login there — Claude will continue once the command exits.

If valid token — proceed.
ERROR: No browser available — use API key fallback: `export DD_APP_KEY=<your-app-key>`

---

## Context to resolve before acting

| Variable | How to resolve |
|---|---|
| `CLUSTER_NAME` | Check `spec.global.clusterName` in `datadog-agent.yaml`, or `kubectl config current-context` |
| `ENV` | Check `tags.datadoghq.com/env` label on the application Deployment |
| `SERVICE_NAME` | Check `tags.datadoghq.com/service` label on the application Deployment |

---

## Step 1: Confirm Pods are Instrumented

### Claude runs

```bash
kubectl get pod -l app=<APP_LABEL> -n <APP_NAMESPACE> \
  -o jsonpath='{.items[0].spec.initContainers[*].name}'
```

If the output includes `datadog-lib-<language>-init` and `datadog-init-apm-inject` — SSI init containers are injected.
