## What it does

The skill walks an agent through a deploy from preview to production. It ships Vercel CLI commands, a sample `vercel.json` with security headers and redirects, edge function and middleware templates, and a GitHub Actions workflow that posts a preview URL on every pull request.

The agent gets context on separating preview and production environment variables, managing domains and logs, and rolling back or promoting a deployment. A troubleshooting section covers failed builds, missing env vars, edge function timeouts and slow cold starts.

You need Node.js 18+, a Vercel account and a Git repository. If preview and production share the same env vars, the skill tells you to split them — otherwise a test key can end up in production. Edge functions cap at 30 seconds, so heavy work belongs in serverless.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill vercel-deployments -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/vercel-deployments/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/vercel-deployments/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill vercel-deployments -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/vercel-deployments/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill vercel-deployments -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/vercel-deployments/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills vercel-deployments
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/vercel-deployments/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill vercel-deployments -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path infrastructure/platforms/vercel-deployments
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/vercel-deployments/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill vercel-deployments -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/infrastructure/platforms/vercel-deployments/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- set up a preview environment for every pull request
- separate preview and production environment variables
- add security headers through `vercel.json`
- roll back or promote a deployment with the Vercel CLI
- find out why an edge function hits the timeout

## Example prompts
- Deploy the project to Vercel preview and give me the URL
- Set up separate environment variables for preview and production
- Add security headers and a redirect from `/blog/:slug` to `/posts/:slug` in `vercel.json`

# Vercel Deployments

Ship web apps quickly with preview environments and managed edge infrastructure.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Deploying Next.js, SvelteKit, Nuxt, or static sites
- Setting up preview environments for every PR
- Configuring edge functions and serverless APIs
- Managing environment variables across preview/production
- Setting up custom domains and redirects

## Prerequisites

- Node.js 18+
- Vercel account (free tier works for personal projects)
- Git repository (GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket)

## Quick Start

```bash
# Install CLI
npm i -g vercel
# Login and link project
vercel login
vercel link
# Deploy to preview
vercel
# Deploy to production
vercel --prod
# Pull environment variables locally
vercel env pull .env.local
```

## Project Configuration

```json
// vercel.json
{
  "framework": "nextjs",
  "buildCommand": "npm run build",
  "outputDirectory": ".next",
  "installCommand": "npm ci",
  "regions": ["iad1", "sfo1", "cdg1"],
  "headers": [
    {
      "source": "/api/(.*)",
      "headers": [
        { "key": "Cache-Control", "value": "no-store" },
        { "key": "X-Content-Type-Options", "value": "nosniff" }
      ]
    },
    {
      "source": "/(.*)",
      "headers": [
        { "key": "X-Frame-Options", "value": "DENY" },
        { "key": "Strict-Transport-Security", "value": "max-age=63072000; includeSubDomains" }
      ]
    }
  ],
  "redirects": [
    { "source": "/blog/:slug", "destination": "/posts/:slug", "permanent": true }
  ],
  "rewrites": [
    { "source": "/api/v1/:path*", "destination": "https://api.example.com/:path*" }
  ]
}
```

## Environment Variables

```bash
# Add environment variables
vercel env add DATABASE_URL production
vercel env add DATABASE_URL preview
vercel env add NEXT_PUBLIC_API_URL production
# List all env vars
vercel env ls
# Pull to local .env.local
vercel env pull .env.local
# Remove an env var
vercel env rm SECRET_KEY production
```

### Environment Separation Pattern

```bash
# Production — real credentials
vercel env add DATABASE_URL production <<< "postgresql://prod-host:5432/app"
vercel env add STRIPE_SECRET_KEY production
# Preview — staging/test credentials
vercel env add DATABASE_URL preview <<< "postgresql://staging-host:5432/app"
vercel env add STRIPE_SECRET_KEY preview   # Use test mode key
