# venice-errors

A skill that maps Venice API error bodies and retry rules so your agent stops burning the per-key error budget. Built for anyone writing a Venice client.

## What it does

The skill covers what Venice API sends back when a call fails. Most failures arrive as `{ "error": "<message>" }`, yet several paths carry more: `DetailedError` with a nested `details` tree and a flat `issues` list, the OpenAI-shaped context overflow carrying `code: "context_length_exceeded"`, upstream rejections with a `request_id`, `ContentViolationError` with `suggested_prompt`, `ProviderContentPolicyError` with `credits_refunded` and `recommended_model`, `PayloadTooLargeError`, and the two distinct `402` bodies from x402.

Status codes from 400 through 504 get their own treatment, 410 for retired endpoints included. So do the three families of rate-limit headers, the per-key error budget (`FAILED_REQUESTS` and `UNSUPPORTED_FEATURE_REQUESTS`), `Retry-After` on overloaded models, and errors that surface inside an SSE stream. A backoff strategy rounds it out.

One detail worth knowing before you write the parser: `details` is not always an object. Some image, video and upstream failures put a plain string there, so check the type before walking the tree. `suggested_prompt` only comes from `/audio/queue` and `/audio/retrieve`, and a blocked image on `/image/generate` returns `200` with the `x-venice-is-content-violation: true` header instead of an error.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add veniceai/skills --skill venice-errors -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/venice-errors/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/venice-errors/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add veniceai/skills --skill venice-errors -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/venice-errors/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add veniceai/skills --skill venice-errors -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/venice-errors/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install veniceai/skills venice-errors
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/venice-errors/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add veniceai/skills --skill venice-errors -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/veniceai/skills --path skills/venice-errors
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/venice-errors/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add veniceai/skills --skill venice-errors -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/veniceai/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/venice-errors/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- parse a 400 body and find which field failed validation
- tell a context overflow apart from an upstream rejection
- set up backoff that stays inside the per-key error budget
- handle both x402 402 response shapes
- catch an error raised mid-SSE-stream and surface it properly

## Example prompts
- Parse this Venice API 400 response and tell me which field I got wrong
- Set up retries for the Venice API that respect the rate-limit headers and the error budget
- What does `code: "PAYMENT_REQUIRED"` mean here, and how should my client react?

# Venice errors & retries

Most Venice errors are `{ "error": "<message>" }`, but several paths add structure. Knowing which shape you got tells you how to react.

## Error body shapes

### 1. `StandardError` - simple message

The default for 4xx/5xx.

```json
{ "error": "Authentication failed" }
```

### 2. `DetailedError` - schema validation failure (`400`)

When a request fails Venice's own schema, `details` is a nested tree (`_errors` recursively keyed by field) and `issues` is the flat issue list. Some image, video and upstream failures instead return `details` as a plain string, so check its type before walking it.

```json
{
  "error": "Invalid request parameters",
  "details": {
    "_errors": [],
    "type": { "_errors": ["Invalid enum value. Expected 'asr' | 'decision' | … , received 'bogus'", "Invalid enum value. Expected 'all' | 'code', received 'bogus'"] }
  },
  "issues": [
    { "code": "invalid_union", "unionErrors": [ … ], "path": ["type"], "message": "Invalid input" }
  ]
}
```

(That is the live response to `GET /models?type=bogus`.)

Many `400`s are plain `StandardError` - handle both. Render `details` / `issues`; don't retry.

### 3. OpenAI-style context overflow (`400`, chat)

```json
{
  "error": {
    "message": "Your request exceeds the model's maximum context. Please reduce your prompt or completion length.",
    "type": "invalid_request_error",
    "param": "messages",
    "code": "context_length_exceeded"
  }
}
```

Note `error` is an **object** here, so OpenAI SDKs can detect it. `message` is the provider's wording when Venice can extract it, otherwise the text above - match on `code`, not `message`. Trim the prompt or lower `max_completion_tokens`.

### 4. Upstream provider rejection (`400`)
