## What it does

The skill equips coding agents with integration rules for `api.venice.ai`. Venice accepts two authentication schemes: standard Bearer API keys and x402 wallet signatures via SIWX. Bearer keys handle backend workflows and account tasks such as `/api_keys` or `/billing`. Wallet signatures let autonomous agents pay for model calls directly via prepaid USDC on Base (chain 8453) or Solana.

Routing follows a strict order of precedence. On endpoints that accept wallets, the `SIGN-IN-WITH-X` header overrides any `Authorization` header present. Initiating an x402 request requires at least $0.10 in wallet credits. The guide details EIP-4361 SIWE payload requirements: `issuedAt` cannot be older than 5 minutes or ahead by more than 30 seconds, and EVM requests without chain 8453 fail immediately.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add veniceai/skills --skill venice-auth -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/venice-auth/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/venice-auth/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add veniceai/skills --skill venice-auth -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/venice-auth/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add veniceai/skills --skill venice-auth -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/venice-auth/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install veniceai/skills venice-auth
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/venice-auth/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add veniceai/skills --skill venice-auth -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/veniceai/skills --path skills/venice-auth
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/venice-auth/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add veniceai/skills --skill venice-auth -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- construct valid `SIGN-IN-WITH-X` headers for x402 wallet authentication
- select the proper key type between `ADMIN` and `INFERENCE` for management routes
- validate EIP-4361 SIWE message fields and timestamps on Base chain 8453
- troubleshoot HTTP 401 and 402 response errors across Venice routes

## Example prompts
- Show the required JSON structure for the SIGN-IN-WITH-X header
- Help me construct a valid SIWE message for Base chain to run Venice chat completions
- Explain why calling `/billing/balance` fails with an INFERENCE API key

description: Authenticate to the Venice API with a Bearer API key or with an x402 / SIWX wallet (EVM on Base, including EIP-1271 smart wallets, or Ed25519 on Solana). Covers which endpoints accept which scheme, the SIGN-IN-WITH-X header format, the SIWE and Solana message fields, the enforced TTL / clock-skew / nonce rules, every X402_SIGN_IN_* error code, the venice-x402-client SDK, and how to choose between the two modes.

# Venice Authentication

Venice declares two auth schemes in its OpenAPI spec: `BearerAuth` (API key) and `siwx` (x402 wallet). Inference endpoints accept either; account endpoints need a key; discovery endpoints need nothing.

## Use when

- You're making your first call to `api.venice.ai`.
- You're building a server-side integration (usually Bearer) or an agent / no-account wallet flow (x402).
- You hit `401` / `402` and need to check header format.
- You're implementing SIWE / Solana signing manually instead of using the SDK.

## Which endpoints accept what

| Endpoints | Bearer key | SIWX wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Inference: `/chat/completions`, `/responses`, `/embeddings`, `/decisions` (+ `/systemone`), `/image/*` (generate, edit, multi-edit, upscale, background-remove), `/images/generations`, `/audio/speech`, `/audio/transcriptions`, `/audio/voices`, `/audio/{queue,retrieve,complete}`, `/audio/voice-changer/{queue,retrieve,complete}`, `/video/{queue,retrieve,complete}`, `/augment/*`, `POST /crypto/rpc/{network}` | yes | yes |
| `/api_keys*` (except `generate_web3_key`), `/billing/*` (except the retired `/billing/usage`, which answers `410` without auth), `/characters*` | yes | no - a SIWX header alone gets `401 Authentication failed` |
| `GET /x402/balance/{wallet}`, `GET /x402/transactions/{wallet}` | no | yes - signer must be `{wallet}` (else `403`) |
| `POST /x402/top-up` | - | payment header (see below) |
| `/models*`, `/image/styles`, `/video/quote` (except upscale models: Bearer key required), `/audio/quote`, `/audio/voice-changer/quote`, `/crypto/rpc/networks`, `/tee/*`, `/api_keys/generate_web3_key` | not required | not required |

On routes that accept a wallet, a `SIGN-IN-WITH-X` header wins: Venice uses wallet auth even when `Authorization` is also present. On Bearer-only routes the SIWX header is ignored. A request with **neither** header on any route that needs credentials (Bearer-only routes included) gets `402` with an x402 discovery body (payment options, SIWX challenge, `authOptions`), not `401`.

## Option A - Bearer API key

```http
Authorization: Bearer <VENICE_API_KEY>
```

- Create keys at <https://venice.ai/settings/api> or via [`venice-api-keys`](../venice-api-keys/SKILL.md).
- Keys carry `apiKeyType` (`ADMIN` or `INFERENCE`), optional `consumptionLimits` (`usd` / `diem` caps over a `limitPeriod`), and `modelPrivacy` (`ALL`, `PRIVATE_TEXT`, `PRIVATE_ONLY`) which restricts which models the key may call.
