## What it does

The skill covers Venice API operations for listing, creating, editing, inspecting, and revoking keys. It distinguishes `INFERENCE` keys, used for model and utility calls, from `ADMIN` keys, which also access key-management and billing routes.

A new key can carry an expiry date, USD or DIEM spending caps, and an `EPOCH`, `MONTH`, or `LIFETIME` reset window. The `modelPrivacy` setting accepts `ALL`, `PRIVATE_TEXT`, or `PRIVATE_ONLY`. Venice returns the secret only when the key is created, so it must be stored at once.

Management routes require an `ADMIN` key. A capped key can return `402` after reaching its allowance even when the account still has funds, while an invalid key returns `401`. Creation is limited to 20 requests per minute and 500 active keys per user.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add veniceai/skills --skill venice-api-keys -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/venice-api-keys/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/venice-api-keys/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add veniceai/skills --skill venice-api-keys -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/venice-api-keys/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add veniceai/skills --skill venice-api-keys -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/venice-api-keys/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install veniceai/skills venice-api-keys
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/venice-api-keys/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add veniceai/skills --skill venice-api-keys -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/veniceai/skills --path skills/venice-api-keys
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/venice-api-keys/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add veniceai/skills --skill venice-api-keys -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/veniceai/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/venice-api-keys/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create a Venice API key for an application
- set a USD or DIEM spending cap
- restrict a key to private models
- inspect key usage and expiry
- revoke or edit an existing key

## Example prompts
- Create an `INFERENCE` key for the service with a `50` USD monthly cap and `PRIVATE_ONLY` model access.
- List active Venice API keys and show their current spending limits.
- Update a key description, then revoke the key with the requested ID.

description: Manage Venice API keys. Covers GET/POST/PATCH/DELETE /api_keys, GET /api_keys/{id}, GET /api_keys/rate_limits, GET /api_keys/rate_limits/log, the two-step /api_keys/generate_web3_key wallet flow, INFERENCE vs ADMIN key types, per-key consumption limits (USD / DIEM) with EPOCH / MONTH / LIFETIME reset windows, and per-key modelPrivacy (ALL / PRIVATE_TEXT / PRIVATE_ONLY).

# Venice API Keys

Admin endpoints for managing Bearer API keys. Management routes need an **ADMIN** key. For wallet-only auth, use [`venice-auth`](../venice-auth/SKILL.md) / [`venice-x402`](../venice-x402/SKILL.md) instead.

| Endpoint | Key type | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| `GET /api_keys` | ADMIN | List your active keys (masked). |
| `POST /api_keys` | ADMIN | Create a key. Response contains the **only copy of the secret**. |
| `PATCH /api_keys` | ADMIN | Update `description`, `expiresAt`, `consumptionLimit`, `limitPeriod`, `modelPrivacy`. |
| `DELETE /api_keys?id=...` | ADMIN | Revoke a key. |
| `GET /api_keys/{id}` | ADMIN | Full details for one key (usage, limits, expiration). |
| `GET /api_keys/rate_limits` | any | Balances + per-model rate limits for the calling key. |
| `GET /api_keys/rate_limits/log` | ADMIN | Last 50 rate-limit breaches on the account. |
| `GET /api_keys/generate_web3_key` | none | Get a short-lived token to sign with a wallet. |
| `POST /api_keys/generate_web3_key` | none | Prove a wallet holds staked VVV and mint an API key. |

Limits: key creation (`POST /api_keys`) is capped at **20 requests/minute per user** and **500 active keys per user** (expired keys don't count).

A request with no `Authorization` header gets a `402` x402 auth challenge rather than `401`; a bad key gets `401`.

## Key types

| Type | Can call |
|---|---|
| `INFERENCE` | Inference and utility routes — `/chat/completions`, `/responses`, `/decisions`, `/systemone`, `/image/*`, `/images/generations`, `/audio/*`, `/video/*`, `/embeddings`, `/augment/*`, `/crypto/rpc/*`, `/characters*`, `/models*` — plus `GET /api_keys/rate_limits`. Admin-only routes return `401` `"Admin API key required"`. |
| `ADMIN` | Everything above, plus `GET/POST/PATCH/DELETE /api_keys`, `GET /api_keys/{id}`, `GET /api_keys/rate_limits/log`, and all billing routes (`/billing/balance`, `/billing/usage-history`, `/billing/usage-analytics`). |

Secrets are prefixed `VENICE_INFERENCE_KEY_` or `VENICE_ADMIN_KEY_`. A leaf app should almost always use **`INFERENCE`** keys — per-app, per-user, with consumption caps.

## `GET /api_keys`

```bash
curl https://api.venice.ai/api/v1/api_keys \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $VENICE_ADMIN_KEY"
