## What it does

The skill walks the whole vector DB path: deployment, collections, indexes, backups, query tuning. What's inside is configs and working code. Qdrant gets a `docker run` with storage volumes plus a `qdrant-config.yaml` covering `hnsw_index` and int8 scalar quantization. pgvector gets `CREATE EXTENSION vector`, a table with a `VECTOR(1536)` column, and an HNSW or IVFFlat index. Weaviate gets a `docker-compose` with API keys and the `text2vec-openai` module.

There's a comparison table for the four databases plus Chroma: what each is best for, hosting, filtering, scale. A separate section handles multi-tenancy — payload indexes on `tenant_id` and filtered search so tenants don't bleed into each other. Backups are covered too: Qdrant snapshots over HTTP and plain `pg_dump` for pgvector.

The performance tuning section is cut off, so don't treat it as a complete reference. One thing to plan for: the Weaviate configs expect `OPENAI_API_KEY` and `WEAVIATE_API_KEY` in the environment, and `docker-compose` won't start without them. These are templates, not a deploy tailored to your cluster.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill vector-database-ops -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/vector-database-ops/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/vector-database-ops/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill vector-database-ops -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/vector-database-ops/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill vector-database-ops -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/vector-database-ops/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills vector-database-ops
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/vector-database-ops/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill vector-database-ops -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path infrastructure/databases/vector-database-ops
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/vector-database-ops/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill vector-database-ops -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/infrastructure/databases/vector-database-ops/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick a vector database for a RAG pipeline
- run Qdrant in Docker with data persisted to disk
- create a collection with an HNSW index and int8 quantization
- isolate tenant data with payload filters
- snapshot a Qdrant collection and restore it

## Example prompts
- Set up a Qdrant collection for RAG with 1536-dim embeddings and a tenant_id filter
- Compare Qdrant, Weaviate, pgvector and Pinecone for our document search
- Back up the documents collection in Qdrant and show me the restore command

# Vector Database Operations

Run production vector databases for AI-powered search, RAG, and recommendation systems.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Setting up a vector database for a RAG or semantic search application
- Choosing between Qdrant, Weaviate, pgvector, or Pinecone
- Managing collections, indexes, and data migrations
- Optimizing query performance and indexing for production loads
- Implementing multi-tenant vector search with namespace isolation

## Vector Database Comparison

| Database | Best For | Hosting | Filtering | Scale |
|----------|----------|---------|-----------|-------|
| **Qdrant** | High-performance, rich filtering, self-hosted | Self / Cloud | Excellent | Very High |
| **Weaviate** | Schema-first, hybrid search, multi-modal | Self / Cloud | Good | High |
| **pgvector** | Already on Postgres, simple use cases | Self | Good | Medium |
| **Pinecone** | Zero-ops managed, serverless | Managed only | Good | Very High |
| **Chroma** | Local dev, prototyping | Self only | Basic | Low-Medium |

## Qdrant — Production Deployment

```bash
# Docker (single node)
docker run -d \
  --name qdrant \
  -p 6333:6333 \
  -p 6334:6334 \
  -v $(pwd)/qdrant-data:/qdrant/storage \
  qdrant/qdrant:latest
# With custom config
docker run -d \
  --name qdrant \
  -p 6333:6333 \
  -v $(pwd)/qdrant-data:/qdrant/storage \
  -v $(pwd)/qdrant-config.yaml:/qdrant/config/production.yaml \
  qdrant/qdrant:latest
```

```yaml
# qdrant-config.yaml
storage:
  storage_path: /qdrant/storage
  on_disk_payload: true          # store payload on disk (saves RAM)
service:
  max_request_size_mb: 32
hnsw_index:
  m: 16                          # graph connections per node
  ef_construct: 100              # accuracy vs build time trade-off
  full_scan_threshold: 10000     # switch to brute force below this
quantization:
  scalar:
    type: int8
    quantile: 0.99
