## What it does

The skill runs S&P 500 names through a Volatility Contraction Pattern detector: it keeps stocks in a Stage 2 uptrend that sit in a tight base and approach a breakout pivot. Each candidate comes with a pattern quality score, an execution state (Pre-breakout, Breakout, Extended, Damaged), T1/T2/T3 contraction depths, pivot price, stop-loss and risk percentage.

Under the hood it is a Python script at `skills/vcp-screener/scripts/screen_vcp.py` pulling data from FMP. You need an FMP key: set the `FMP_API_KEY` environment variable or pass `--api-key`. The free tier covers the default run over the top 100 candidates; full S&P 500 screening needs a paid tier. The `--strict` flag returns only valid VCPs in Pre-breakout or Breakout.

A separate mode, `--history --ticker SYM`, walks a multi-year price path and emits every VCP it finds with forward outcomes: breakout, stop-hit or timeout, plus days to outcome and max gain and loss. Treat it as pattern study, not a live screener — `marketCap` and the RS percentile are computed for the ticker in isolation, so the report is a poor fit for position sizing. Detection thresholds such as `--min-contractions`, `--t1-depth-min` and `--breakout-volume-ratio` are exposed as flags for backtesting.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tradermonty/claude-trading-skills --skill vcp-screener -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/vcp-screener/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/vcp-screener/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tradermonty/claude-trading-skills --skill vcp-screener -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/vcp-screener/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tradermonty/claude-trading-skills --skill vcp-screener -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/vcp-screener/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install tradermonty/claude-trading-skills vcp-screener
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/vcp-screener/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tradermonty/claude-trading-skills --skill vcp-screener -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/tradermonty/claude-trading-skills --path skills/vcp-screener
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/vcp-screener/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tradermonty/claude-trading-skills --skill vcp-screener -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/tradermonty/claude-trading-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/vcp-screener/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- screen S&P 500 names for Stage 2 uptrends in a tight base
- find breakout candidates with a precomputed stop and risk
- check whether price is overextended from its SMA200
- study how the VCP pattern played out on one ticker's history
- tune detection thresholds for your own backtest

## Example prompts
- screen the S&P 500 for VCP setups and show the top candidates
- find every historical VCP in TSLA over 750 trading days
- run strict mode: only valid VCPs in Pre-breakout or Breakout

description: Screen S&P 500 stocks for Mark Minervini's Volatility Contraction Pattern (VCP) and detect historical VCPs in a single ticker's price path. Identifies Stage 2 uptrend stocks forming tight bases with contracting volatility near breakout pivot points; in historical single-ticker mode walks a multi-year history and emits every VCP that formed with forward-outcome stats (breakout / stop-hit / timeout). Use when user requests VCP screening, Minervini-style setups, tight base patterns, volatility contraction breakout candidates, Stage 2 momentum stock scanning, or historical VCP pattern study on a specific ticker (e.g. FIX, TSLA).

# VCP Screener - Minervini Volatility Contraction Pattern

Screen S&P 500 stocks for Mark Minervini's Volatility Contraction Pattern (VCP), identifying Stage 2 uptrend stocks with contracting volatility near breakout pivot points.

## When to Use

- User asks for VCP screening or Minervini-style setups
- User wants to find tight base / volatility contraction patterns
- User requests Stage 2 momentum stock scanning
- User asks for breakout candidates with defined risk
- User asks "find every historical VCP in <TICKER>" or wants to study one ticker's
  past VCP setups with forward outcomes (`--history --ticker SYM`)

## Prerequisites

- FMP API key (set `FMP_API_KEY` environment variable or pass `--api-key`)
- Free tier (250 calls/day) is sufficient for default screening (top 100 candidates)
- Paid tier recommended for full S&P 500 screening (`--full-sp500`)

## Workflow

### Step 1: Prepare and Execute Screening

Run the VCP screener script:

```bash
# Default: S&P 500, top 100 candidates
python3 skills/vcp-screener/scripts/screen_vcp.py --output-dir skills/vcp-screener/scripts
# Custom universe
python3 skills/vcp-screener/scripts/screen_vcp.py --universe AAPL NVDA MSFT AMZN META --output-dir skills/vcp-screener/scripts
# Full S&P 500 (paid API tier)
python3 skills/vcp-screener/scripts/screen_vcp.py --full-sp500 --output-dir skills/vcp-screener/scripts
```

### Strict Mode (Minervini pure setup)

Only return stocks with `valid_vcp=True` AND `execution_state` in `(Pre-breakout, Breakout)`:

```bash
python3 skills/vcp-screener/scripts/screen_vcp.py --strict --output-dir reports/
```

### Historical single-ticker mode

Walk one ticker's multi-year history, detect every VCP that ever formed, and
