## What it does

This skill screens US equities with a dividend yield of 3% or more, P/E below 20, and P/B below 2. It then checks 3-year trends in dividends, revenue and EPS, along with financial health, free-cash-flow coverage, ROE and profit margins. Candidates are ranked by a composite score and written to JSON.

The two-stage mode pre-filters stocks with the FINVIZ Elite API before running detailed analysis through the FMP API. Its `scripts/screen_dividend_stocks.py` script accepts a result limit and a custom output path. The JSON output can feed a Markdown report with valuation, growth and dividend sustainability figures.

Two-stage screening needs `FMP_API_KEY` and `FINVIZ_API_KEY`; the FINVIZ key requires a FINVIZ Elite subscription at about $40/month or ~$330/year. That cost matters before choosing the lower-FMP-call workflow.

```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/value-dividend-screener/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/value-dividend-screener/
### Codex
1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tradermonty/claude-trading-skills --skill value-dividend-screener -a codex
```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/value-dividend-screener/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/
### Cursor
1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tradermonty/claude-trading-skills --skill value-dividend-screener -a cursor
```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/value-dividend-screener/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/
### GitHub Copilot
1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install tradermonty/claude-trading-skills value-dividend-screener
```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
## When to use it
- screen US stocks with a dividend yield of 3% or more
- filter companies below P/E 20 and P/B 2
- check 3-year dividend, revenue and EPS trends
- assess dividend coverage with free cash flow
- rank candidates by a composite quality score
## Example prompts
- Screen US dividend stocks with yields of at least 3% and P/E below 20.
- Run the two-stage FINVIZ and FMP screen and save the output to `results.json`.
- Review dividend sustainability for the screened stocks and create a Markdown report.
# Value Dividend Screener
## Overview
This skill identifies high-quality dividend stocks that combine value characteristics, attractive income generation, and consistent growth using a **two-stage screening approach**:
1. **FINVIZ Elite API (Optional but Recommended)**: Pre-screen stocks with basic criteria (fast, cost-effective)
2. **Financial Modeling Prep (FMP) API**: Detailed fundamental analysis of candidates
Screen US equities based on quantitative criteria including valuation ratios, dividend metrics, financial health, and profitability. Generate comprehensive reports ranking stocks by composite quality scores with detailed fundamental analysis.
**Efficiency Advantage**: Using FINVIZ pre-screening can reduce FMP API calls by 90%, making this approach ideal for free-tier API users.
## When to Use
Invoke this skill when the user requests:
- "Find high-quality dividend stocks"
- "Screen for value dividend opportunities"
- "Show me stocks with strong dividend growth"
- "Find income stocks trading at reasonable valuations"
- "Screen for sustainable high-yield stocks"
- Any request combining dividend yield, valuation metrics, and fundamental analysis
## Workflow
### Step 1: Verify API Key Availability
**For Two-Stage Screening (Recommended):**
Check if both API keys are available:
```python
import os
fmp_api_key = os.environ.get('FMP_API_KEY')
finviz_api_key = os.environ.get('FINVIZ_API_KEY')
```
If not available, ask user to provide API keys or set environment variables:
```bash
export FMP_API_KEY=your_fmp_key_here
export FINVIZ_API_KEY=your_finviz_key_here
```
**For FMP-Only Screening:**
Check if FMP API key is available:
```python
import os
api_key = os.environ.get('FMP_API_KEY')
```
If not available, ask user to provide API key or set environment variable:
```bash
export FMP_API_KEY=your_key_here
```
**FINVIZ Elite API Key:**
- Requires FINVIZ Elite subscription (~$40/month or ~$330/year)
- Provides access to CSV export of pre-screened results
- Highly recommended for reducing FMP API usage
Provide instructions from `references/fmp_api_guide.md` if needed.
