## What it does

The skill introduces a `validatedHandler` wrapper for Next.js App Router endpoints. It parses either query string parameters or the request JSON payload against a Zod schema. If checks fail, the handler sends a 400 response with structured issue paths.

The inner route function receives fully inferred TypeScript types. Runtime crashes trigger a generic 500 response logged via `console.error`.

Your project must run on Next.js with TypeScript and Zod installed. Missing any of these dependencies breaks the handler code.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill validated-handler -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/validated-handler/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/validated-handler/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill validated-handler -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/validated-handler/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill validated-handler -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/validated-handler/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills validated-handler
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/validated-handler/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill validated-handler -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/nextjs/api/validated-handler
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/validated-handler/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill validated-handler -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- remove repetitive query parsing across Next.js API routes
- enforce uniform 400 error structures with Zod validation details
- derive TypeScript types directly from request schemas
- capture unhandled route exceptions with automated 500 responses

## Example prompts
- Set up `src/lib/api/handler.ts` using the `validatedHandler` pattern.
- Create a GET route in Next.js that validates pagination query parameters with Zod.
- Refactor `src/app/api/schools/route.ts` to use `validatedHandler` for payload validation.

# Next.js Validated Handler Pattern

Type-safe API route handler with automatic Zod validation for Next.js App Router.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Building Next.js API routes (App Router)
- Want automatic input validation with Zod
- Need consistent error handling across API routes
- Want to eliminate boilerplate validation code
- Building type-safe APIs with TypeScript

## The Problem

Without a validated handler, every API route has repetitive validation code:

```typescript
// ❌ REPETITIVE - Every route looks like this
export async function GET(request: NextRequest) {
  try {
    // 1. Parse query params
    const { searchParams } = new URL(request.url);
    const rawPage = searchParams.get('page');
    const rawLimit = searchParams.get('limit');
    // 2. Validate each param manually
    if (!rawPage || isNaN(Number(rawPage))) {
      return NextResponse.json(
        { error: 'Invalid page parameter' },
        { status: 400 }
      );
    }
    if (!rawLimit || isNaN(Number(rawLimit))) {
      return NextResponse.json(
        { error: 'Invalid limit parameter' },
        { status: 400 }
      );
    }
    const page = Number(rawPage);
    const limit = Number(rawLimit);
    // 3. Validate ranges
    if (page < 1) {
      return NextResponse.json(
        { error: 'Page must be >= 1' },
        { status: 400 }
      );
    }
    if (limit < 1 || limit > 100) {
      return NextResponse.json(
        { error: 'Limit must be between 1 and 100' },
        { status: 400 }
      );
    }
    // 4. Finally, business logic
    const data = await fetchData(page, limit);
    return NextResponse.json(data);
  } catch (error) {
    console.error(error);
    return NextResponse.json(
      { error: 'Internal server error' },
      { status: 500 }
    );
  }
}
```

**Problems**:
- 30+ lines of boilerplate per route
- Error-prone manual validation
- Inconsistent error messages
- No type safety
- Hard to maintain across 100+ routes

## The Solution: validatedHandler

Create a reusable handler that combines Zod validation with Next.js API routes:

```typescript
// src/lib/api/handler.ts
import { NextRequest, NextResponse } from 'next/server';
import { z } from 'zod';
type ValidationSource = 'query' | 'body';
export function validatedHandler<T extends z.ZodType>(
  config: {
    input: { schema: T; source: ValidationSource };
  },
  handler: (ctx: { input: z.infer<T>; request: NextRequest }) => Promise<Response>,
) {
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 58b80c98d832c141 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
