# v4-security-foundations

Walks through Uniswap v4 hook threats before you write code: caller checks, permission flags, delta accounting. Useful when touching beforeSwap or PoolManager.

## What it does

The skill lays out a threat model for Uniswap v4 hooks. It ships a table of all 14 permission flags with risk levels from LOW to CRITICAL, a breakdown of the NoOp rug pull through `beforeSwapReturnDelta`, and the PoolManager delta rules: the `sum(deltas) == 0` invariant and the `sync` → `transfer` → `settle` order.

Access control gets its own section. Every hook callback has to confirm `msg.sender` is the `PoolManager` address. Skip that and anyone can call the function directly and drain funds through a fake callback. The `sender` parameter points at the router, not the end user, so router allowlisting matters too.

The skill reads files, greps code, fetches web pages and can spawn the `Explore` subagent. It runs on `opus`. If you plan to interact with a third-party hook that has `beforeSwapReturnDelta` enabled, that is a reason to check its code and owner before the first transaction.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Uniswap/uniswap-ai --skill v4-security-foundations -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/v4-security-foundations/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/v4-security-foundations/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Uniswap/uniswap-ai --skill v4-security-foundations -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/v4-security-foundations/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Uniswap/uniswap-ai --skill v4-security-foundations -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/v4-security-foundations/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Uniswap/uniswap-ai v4-security-foundations
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/v4-security-foundations/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Uniswap/uniswap-ai --skill v4-security-foundations -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Uniswap/uniswap-ai --path packages/plugins/uniswap-hooks/skills/v4-security-foundations
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/v4-security-foundations/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Uniswap/uniswap-ai --skill v4-security-foundations -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Uniswap/uniswap-ai/tree/HEAD/packages/plugins/uniswap-hooks/skills/v4-security-foundations/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- verify that only PoolManager can call your hook callbacks
- assess the risk level of each of the 14 permission flags
- understand the NoOp rug pull on returned swap deltas
- get the sync, transfer and settle order right
- close reentrancy gaps from external calls in a hook

## Example prompts
- Review my v4 hook against the v4-security-foundations threat model
- Explain the risk of the beforeSwapReturnDelta flag in my contract
- Check my beforeSwap: is the msg.sender verification correct?

# v4 Hook Security Foundations

Security-first guide for building Uniswap v4 hooks. Hook vulnerabilities can drain user funds—understand these concepts before writing any hook code.

## Threat Model

Before writing code, understand the v4 security context:

| Threat Area             | Description                                                | Mitigation                                     |
| ----------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------- |
| **Caller Verification** | Only `PoolManager` should invoke hook functions            | Verify `msg.sender == address(poolManager)`    |
| **Sender Identity** | `msg.sender` always equals PoolManager, never the end user | Use `sender` parameter for user identity |
| **Router Context** | The `sender` parameter identifies the router, not the user | Implement router allowlisting |
| **State Exposure** | Hook state is readable during mid-transaction execution | Avoid storing sensitive data on-chain |
| **Reentrancy Surface** | External calls from hooks can enable reentrancy | Use reentrancy guards; minimize external calls |

## Permission Flags Risk Matrix

All 14 hook permissions with associated risk levels:

| Permission Flag                   | Risk Level | Description                 | Security Notes                |
| --------------------------------- | ---------- | --------------------------- | ----------------------------- |
| `beforeInitialize`                | LOW        | Called before pool creation | Validate pool parameters      |
| `afterInitialize` | LOW | Called after pool creation | Safe for state initialization |
| `beforeAddLiquidity`              | MEDIUM     | Before LP deposits          | Can block legitimate LPs      |
| `afterAddLiquidity`               | LOW        | After LP deposits           | Safe for tracking/rewards     |
| `beforeRemoveLiquidity`           | HIGH       | Before LP withdrawals       | Can trap user funds           |
```
