## What it does

The skill walks through an MCP server and finds where it stalls. It starts from the current picture: roughly 1.8s cold start, a fresh connection for every request, a linear scan across 213+ tools, no transport reuse and idle connections left uncleaned. The targets are spelled out too — startup under 400ms, tool lookup under 5ms via a hash table, 90%+ pool hits, p95 response under 100ms.

Implementation centres on an `OptimizedMCPServer` class built with `@modelcontextprotocol/sdk` and `StdioServerTransport`. The pool keeps between 5 and 50 connections, idle ones time out at 300000 ms, a connection retires after 1000 uses, and health checks run every 30000 ms. Tool lookup uses a `Map` plus a category index, an LRU cache and fuzzy matching. Pooling, balancing and transport work are split into separate tasks you can fire off in parallel.

This is written for claude-flow v3, so it does nothing in a project without that stack: the code assumes `src/core/mcp/mcp-server.ts` and the `@claude-flow/cli` package layout. Pool behaviour comes from `OptimizedMCPConfig`; leave it out and the class falls back to its own constants.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ruvnet/ruflo --skill v3-mcp-optimization -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/v3-mcp-optimization/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/v3-mcp-optimization/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ruvnet/ruflo --skill v3-mcp-optimization -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/v3-mcp-optimization/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ruvnet/ruflo --skill v3-mcp-optimization -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/v3-mcp-optimization/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install ruvnet/ruflo v3-mcp-optimization
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/v3-mcp-optimization/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ruvnet/ruflo --skill v3-mcp-optimization -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/ruvnet/ruflo --path v3/@claude-flow/cli/.claude/skills/v3-mcp-optimization
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/v3-mcp-optimization/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ruvnet/ruflo --skill v3-mcp-optimization -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/ruvnet/ruflo/tree/HEAD/v3/@claude-flow/cli/.claude/skills/v3-mcp-optimization/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- cut MCP server cold start from 1.8s
- reuse connections instead of opening one per request
- turn tool lookup across 213+ tools into O(1)
- add load balancing between MCP tools
- set up health checks and metrics for the server

## Example prompts
- Analyze the MCP server architecture and find the bottlenecks
- Implement connection pooling with reuse for the MCP server
- Add dynamic load balancing for MCP tools

# V3 MCP Optimization

## What This Skill Does

Optimizes claude-flow v3 MCP (Model Context Protocol) server implementation with advanced transport layer optimizations, connection pooling, load balancing, and comprehensive performance monitoring to achieve sub-100ms response times.

## Quick Start

```bash
# Initialize MCP optimization analysis
Task("MCP architecture", "Analyze current MCP server performance and bottlenecks", "mcp-specialist")
# Optimization implementation (parallel)
Task("Connection pooling", "Implement MCP connection pooling and reuse", "mcp-specialist")
Task("Load balancing", "Add dynamic load balancing for MCP tools", "mcp-specialist")
Task("Transport optimization", "Optimize transport layer performance", "mcp-specialist")
```

## MCP Performance Architecture

### Current State Analysis
```
Current MCP Issues:
├── Cold Start Latency: ~1.8s MCP server init
├── Connection Overhead: New connection per request
├── Tool Registry: Linear search O(n) for 213+ tools
├── Transport Layer: No connection reuse
└── Memory Usage: No cleanup of idle connections
Target Performance:
├── Startup Time: <400ms (4.5x improvement)
├── Tool Lookup: <5ms (O(1) hash table)
├── Connection Reuse: 90%+ connection pool hits
├── Response Time: <100ms p95
└── Memory Efficiency: 50% reduction
```

### MCP Server Architecture
```typescript
// src/core/mcp/mcp-server.ts
import { Server } from '@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/server/index.js';
import { StdioServerTransport } from '@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/server/stdio.js';
interface OptimizedMCPConfig {
  // Connection pooling
  maxConnections: number;
  idleTimeoutMs: number;
  connectionReuseEnabled: boolean;
  // Tool registry
  toolCacheEnabled: boolean;
  toolIndexType: 'hash' | 'trie';
  // Performance
  requestTimeoutMs: number;
  batchingEnabled: boolean;
  compressionEnabled: boolean;
  // Monitoring
  metricsEnabled: boolean;
  healthCheckIntervalMs: number;
}
export class OptimizedMCPServer {
  private server: Server;
  private connectionPool: ConnectionPool;
  private toolRegistry: FastToolRegistry;
  private loadBalancer: MCPLoadBalancer;
  private metrics: MCPMetrics;
  constructor(config: OptimizedMCPConfig) {
    this.server = new Server({
      name: 'claude-flow-v3',
      version: '3.0.0'
    }, {
