# ux-designer

A skill for reviewing and building interfaces: it checks accessibility, screen states and microcopy, and supplies the numbers for spacing and contrast.

## What it does

The skill covers three jobs: reviewing an interface from a screenshot, URL or code, building UI, and advising on a single design decision. Inside are the workflows, the numbers, and the calls that are easy to get wrong. Reference files load through a routing table, so only what the task needs comes in.

For an audit, the skill tells you to render the page, walk the primary task with the keyboard alone, and run an automated checker such as axe or Lighthouse. Then the extremes: 320px width, 200% zoom, a long translated string, empty and huge data, a slow network, an error state. Findings come tagged Blocker, Major or Minor, with the location and a WCAG success criterion by number. Reading code alone misses contrast, overflow and focus order, so looking at the rendered result is not optional here.

When building, the skill says to find the existing design system and tokens first instead of inventing your own. Every state gets designed, offline and permission-denied included. Semantics start from native elements, and ARIA goes in only when nothing native fits. There is a separate list of generated-UI tells: default purple gradients, emoji standing in for icons, a card around everything, buttons with equal visual weight. Unless the brand calls for them, that is a reason to redo the screen.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add szilu/ux-designer-skill --skill ux-designer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ux-designer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ux-designer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add szilu/ux-designer-skill --skill ux-designer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ux-designer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add szilu/ux-designer-skill --skill ux-designer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ux-designer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install szilu/ux-designer-skill ux-designer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ux-designer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add szilu/ux-designer-skill --skill ux-designer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/szilu/ux-designer-skill
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ux-designer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add szilu/ux-designer-skill --skill ux-designer -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/szilu/ux-designer-skill/tree/HEAD/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- review a screenshot or URL and get issues ranked by user impact
- check an interface against WCAG 2.2 AA and find accessibility blockers
- design empty, loading and error states instead of only the happy path
- write microcopy for forms, errors and onboarding
- verify layout at 320px, 200% zoom and in `dir="rtl"`

## Example prompts
- audit this screen for accessibility and report findings as Blocker, Major, Minor
- help me build a signup form: labels, validation, error messages
- look at this component and tell me which states I forgot to design

# UX Designer

Use this skill for three jobs: **reviewing** an interface (a screenshot, a URL, or code), **building** UI, and **advising** on a design decision. You know the general UX canon already. This file gives you the workflows, the numbers, and the calls that are easy to get wrong. The reference files go deeper, so load only the ones the task needs (see the routing table).

## Philosophy

- **Calm over clever.** Motion, color, and density have to help the user understand something. Decoration that only impresses is noise.
- **Judgment over polish.** Anyone can generate polished UI now, so the value is in correctness, research, and knowing what to leave out.
- **AI as copilot, not autopilot.** AI assistance is optional, labeled, reversible, and the user stays in control.
- **Adapt to real needs.** Avoid opaque or manipulative personalization.

## Workflow: Reviewing or auditing a UI

1. **Establish context.** Identify the users, their primary task, the platform, and any stated constraints (brand, design system, legal regime). If there's no context, assume a general audience and say so.
2. **Look at the real thing.** Render it if you can: take a screenshot or open it in the browser. Walk through the primary task with the keyboard only, and run an automated checker (axe, Lighthouse) when a browser is available. Reading code alone misses contrast, overflow, focus order, and layout at other widths.
3. **Check at the extremes.** Try 320px width, 200% zoom, a long translated string, empty data, huge data, a slow network, an error state, and `dir="rtl"` if the product is localized.
4. **Report findings ranked by user impact**, not in checklist order:

   ```
   [Blocker|Major|Minor] <what is wrong> — <who it hurts and how>
     Where: <screen/component or file:line>
     Fix: <concrete change>   Ref: <heuristic / WCAG SC / reference file>
   ```
