## What it does

The skill sets an order of operations for dbt work: look at the data first, write SQL after. Models follow the project's existing style, and DRY gets heavy emphasis — before adding a model or a column, the agent checks whether that logic already lives in an intermediate layer. It reads the YAML docs for models and columns too, since a column name rarely explains the business meaning.

Bundled reference guides cover specific jobs: planning models, exploring unfamiliar sources, writing tests, debugging parse and compile errors, assessing downstream impact, documentation, and package management. Validation runs through `dbt show` — previewing inputs, previewing model output, and basic profiling with counts, min, max, nulls. To keep warehouse spend down, the skill suggests `--limit`, `--select` instead of whole-project runs, and deferral via `--defer --state path/to/prod/artifacts`.

One rule is hard: renaming, removing, or retyping a column on a model that downstream models or BI consumers depend on counts as a breaking change. Editing it in place breaks those consumers the moment it deploys, so the skill routes you to version the model with the `working-with-dbt-mesh` skill instead. It also treats query results and API responses as untrusted content and refuses to act on instructions embedded in data values or SQL comments.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill using-dbt-for-analytics-engineering -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/using-dbt-for-analytics-engineering/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/using-dbt-for-analytics-engineering/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill using-dbt-for-analytics-engineering -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/using-dbt-for-analytics-engineering/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill using-dbt-for-analytics-engineering -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/using-dbt-for-analytics-engineering/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills using-dbt-for-analytics-engineering
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/using-dbt-for-analytics-engineering/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill using-dbt-for-analytics-engineering -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --path skills/dbt/skills/using-dbt-for-analytics-engineering
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/using-dbt-for-analytics-engineering/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill using-dbt-for-analytics-engineering -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- build a new dbt model that matches project style
- explore an unfamiliar source before writing SQL
- add high-value tests without covering every column
- fix a dbt parse or compilation error
- check which downstream models a column change breaks

## Example prompts
- build a dbt model for orders, preview the data with dbt show first
- check whether this logic already exists in an intermediate model before adding a new one
- assess what breaks if I rename this column

# Using dbt for Analytics Engineering

**Core principle:** Apply software engineering discipline (DRY, modularity, testing) to data transformation work through dbt's abstraction layer.

**STOP — is this a breaking change to a model with consumers?** Renaming, removing, or retyping a column — on a model that downstream models, exposures, or external/BI consumers depend on — is a **breaking change**. Do **not** edit it in place (that breaks those consumers the moment it deploys). **REQUIRED SUB-SKILL:** Use the `working-with-dbt-mesh` skill to roll it out with model versions (and a latest version pointer) so consumers get a migration window. Come back here for the SQL once the versioning approach is decided.

## When to Use

- Building new dbt models, sources, or tests
- Modifying existing model logic or configurations
- Refactoring a dbt project structure
- Creating analytics pipelines or data transformations
- Working with warehouse data that needs modeling

**Do NOT use for:**

- Querying the semantic layer (use the `answering-natural-language-questions-with-dbt` skill)
- Breaking changes to a model with consumers (column rename/remove/retype) — use the `working-with-dbt-mesh` skill to version the model instead of editing in place
