## What it does

The skill covers MSCAs — smart contract accounts that gain features through installable modules. Two references sit inside: `references/circle-smart-account.md` for passkey registration and login, account creation, gasless USDC transfers and batched calls, and `references/passkey-recovery.md` for BIP-39 mnemonic recovery when a passkey is lost.

The agent installs `@circle-fin/modular-wallets-core` and `viem`; recovery also needs `bip39`. Then the project env file gets one pair of variables: `NEXT_PUBLIC_CLIENT_KEY` and `NEXT_PUBLIC_CLIENT_URL` for Next.js, or `VITE_CLIENT_KEY` and `VITE_CLIENT_URL` for Vite. The Client Key comes from Console → Keys → Client Keys, and the Passkey Domain is configured separately because passkeys are domain-bound.

The chain path is appended in code through `toModularTransport`, not in the env var — `${clientUrl}/polygonAmoy` for Polygon testnet, for instance. Supported chains include Arc, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Base, Monad, Optimism, Polygon and Unichain. One thing to watch: MSCAs deploy lazily, so the first operation goes out with nonce 0, otherwise the SDK returns error 155203. USDC amounts are encoded with `parseUnits(value, 6)`, not 18, and that is an easy slip.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add circlefin/skills --skill use-modular-wallets -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/use-modular-wallets/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/use-modular-wallets/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add circlefin/skills --skill use-modular-wallets -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/use-modular-wallets/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add circlefin/skills --skill use-modular-wallets -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/use-modular-wallets/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install circlefin/skills use-modular-wallets
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/use-modular-wallets/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add circlefin/skills --skill use-modular-wallets -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/circlefin/skills --path plugins/circle/skills/use-modular-wallets
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/use-modular-wallets/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add circlefin/skills --skill use-modular-wallets -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/circlefin/skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/circle/skills/use-modular-wallets/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- add passkey sign-in to a wallet without passwords
- send a USDC transfer with gas covered
- batch several calls into one user operation
- recover wallet access from a BIP-39 mnemonic
- wire up a multisig or session key module

## Example prompts
- Build a Circle Modular Wallets wallet with passkey registration and a gasless USDC transfer
- Add BIP-39 mnemonic passkey recovery to my project
- Batch several calls through sendUserOperation with paymaster: true

## Overview

Modular Wallets are flexible smart contract accounts (MSCAs) that extend functionality through installable modules. Built on ERC-4337 (account abstraction) and ERC-6900 (modular smart contract framework), they support passkey authentication, gasless transactions, batch operations, and custom logic modules (multisig, subscriptions, session keys). MSCAs are lazily deployed -- gas fees for account creation are deferred until the first outbound transaction.

## Prerequisites / Setup

### Installation

```bash
npm install @circle-fin/modular-wallets-core viem
# Passkey recovery also needs bip39:
npm install bip39
```

### Environment Variables

Write or merge into the project's env file when scaffolding Modular Wallets:

```bash
# .env.local (Next.js) or .env (Vite)
# Paste your Client Key from Console → Keys → Client Keys (shown once; starts with TEST_API_KEY:)
NEXT_PUBLIC_CLIENT_KEY=
NEXT_PUBLIC_CLIENT_URL=https://modular-sdk.circle.com/v1/rpc/w3s/buidl
VITE_CLIENT_KEY=
VITE_CLIENT_URL=https://modular-sdk.circle.com/v1/rpc/w3s/buidl
```

Use the `NEXT_PUBLIC_*` pair for Next.js or the `VITE_*` pair for Vite — not both. Client URL is fixed — do not ask the user to copy it from Console. Chain paths (e.g. `/arcTestnet`) are appended in code via `toModularTransport`, not in the env var.

Before using the SDK, complete setup (see [Console Setup](https://developers.circle.com/wallets/modular/console-setup.md)):

1. Install the SDK and set the client env vars (see Installation and Environment Variables above).
2. In Console → Keys → Client Keys, create a Client Key.
3. Configure the Passkey Domain (passkeys are domain-bound).
