# uptime-monitoring

A skill that walks your coding agent through uptime checks, a public status page and incident tracking. Useful when you need to know which dependency actually broke.

## What it does

The skill covers health check endpoints, a public status page API, heartbeat monitoring and Kubernetes probes. It ships a short Node.js/Express example plus a `references/` directory with five guides: `health-check-endpoints.md`, `python-health-checks.md`, `uptime-monitor-with-heartbeat.md`, `public-status-page-api.md` and `kubernetes-health-probes.md`.

The agent follows a DO/DON'T list from the skill. Check every critical dependency rather than just the app process, and keep check history so you can see trends. Timeouts should not be set too low, and alerts should not fire on every single failure. There is no monitoring server in the box — you write the code in your own project.

Two rules are worth reading twice. Health checks are not meant for load balancing, and the response must not expose sensitive information. That is a good reason to audit your existing `/health` routes if they leak versions, connection strings or internal hostnames.

## Requirements
- Works with: Kubernetes

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill uptime-monitoring -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/uptime-monitoring/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/uptime-monitoring/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill uptime-monitoring -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/uptime-monitoring/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill uptime-monitoring -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/uptime-monitoring/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts uptime-monitoring
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/uptime-monitoring/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill uptime-monitoring -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --path skills/uptime-monitoring
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/uptime-monitoring/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill uptime-monitoring -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- add a health check endpoint to a service
- check the database, cache and external API in one deep probe
- build a public status page with check history
- set up heartbeat monitoring and status-change alerts
- write Kubernetes health probes

## Example prompts
- add a health check endpoint and a deep dependency probe to this project
- build a public status page with check history using this skill
- set up heartbeat monitoring and alerts on status changes

## Overview

Set up comprehensive uptime monitoring with health checks, status pages, and incident tracking to ensure visibility into service availability.

## When to Use

- Service availability tracking
- Health check implementation
- Status page creation
- Incident management
- SLA monitoring

## Quick Start

Minimal working example:

```javascript
// Node.js health check
const express = require("express");
const app = express();
app.get("/health", (req, res) => {
  res.json({
    status: "ok",
    timestamp: new Date().toISOString(),
    uptime: process.uptime(),
  });
});
app.get("/health/deep", async (req, res) => {
  const health = {
    status: "ok",
    checks: {
      database: "unknown",
      cache: "unknown",
      externalApi: "unknown",
    },
  };
  try {
    const dbResult = await db.query("SELECT 1");
    health.checks.database = dbResult ? "ok" : "error";
// ... (see reference guides for full implementation)
```

## Reference Guides

## Best Practices

### ✅ DO

- Implement comprehensive health checks
- Check all critical dependencies
- Use appropriate timeout values
- Track response times
- Store check history
- Monitor uptime trends
- Alert on status changes
- Use standard HTTP status codes

### ❌ DON'T

- Check only application process
- Ignore external dependencies
- Set timeouts too low
- Alert on every failure
- Use health checks for load balancing
- Expose sensitive information
