## What it does

\`box` works on a remote container, not your machine. Your agent's own file and shell tools stay local; anything that has to happen inside the box goes through `box`. The skill covers installing the CLI, authenticating and picking a box.

Every command needs an API key or it fails with "API token required". Set it once with `export UPSTASH_BOX_API_KEY=box_...`, or pass `--token` on a single command. Box resolution goes `--box <id>`, then `$BOX_ID`, then the nearest `.box` file found by walking upward. That upward search means `cd`-ing into another project can silently pick up a pin left there earlier and run against the wrong box — pass `--box` explicitly in any session touching more than one box. `box status` reports which box it resolved and where that came from.

\`--keep-alive`, `--browser`, `--env` and `--size` are create-time only; changing any of them means making a new box. A plain `box create --no-repl` pauses when idle and resumes on the next command. Add `--keep-alive` only when something must survive an idle gap, such as a detached server behind a preview URL, and remember the box keeps costing money until you pause or delete it. The remote shell is `sh`, not bash, so a heredoc inside `box exec` fails with `Syntax error: redirection unexpected`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add upstash/skills --skill upstash-box-cli -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/upstash-box-cli/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/upstash-box-cli/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add upstash/skills --skill upstash-box-cli -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/upstash-box-cli/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add upstash/skills --skill upstash-box-cli -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/upstash-box-cli/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install upstash/skills upstash-box-cli
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/upstash-box-cli/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add upstash/skills --skill upstash-box-cli -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/upstash/skills --path skills/upstash-box-cli
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/upstash-box-cli/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add upstash/skills --skill upstash-box-cli -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/upstash/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/upstash-box-cli/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- run builds and tests in a remote container without touching the local machine
- clone a repo and open a pull request with a screenshot attached
- publish a public URL for a server running inside the box
- screenshot a page with headless Chromium
- schedule recurring work or run an AI agent inside a box

## Example prompts
- create a node box and run npm test inside it
- take a screenshot of the page and attach it to the issue
- start the dev server in a box and give me the public URL

`box` operates on a **remote container**, not this machine. Your own file and shell
tools act locally; anything that must happen inside the box goes through `box`.

## Install

```bash
npm i -g @upstash/box-cli
```

## Authentication

Every command needs an API key, or it fails with "API token required". Set it once,
or pass `--token` on any single command. Create one at
https://console.upstash.com/box.

```bash
export UPSTASH_BOX_API_KEY=box_...
```

## Selecting a box

Resolution order is `--box <id>`, then `$BOX_ID`, then the nearest `.box` file
(searched upward). Create one and pin it to the working directory:

```bash
box create --no-repl --runtime node                    # prints the id, writes .box
box create --no-repl --runtime node --clone-repo https://github.com/org/repo
box list                                               # find an existing box
box use <box-id>                                       # pin one to this directory
box status                                             # id, where it came from, state
```

`--keep-alive`, `--browser`, `--env` and `--size` can only be chosen at create
time; to change any of them you make a new box. There is no resize.

Default to a plain `box create --no-repl`. A plain box pauses when it goes idle
and resumes on the next command, which is what almost all work wants:

```bash
box create --no-repl --browser             # provision a headless Chromium
box create --no-repl --env KEY=VAL         # env for this box (repeatable)
box create --no-repl --size medium         # small (default), medium, large
```

Add `--keep-alive` only when something has to survive an idle gap: a detached
server you are about to reach over a preview URL, or a job that keeps running
between commands. It stops the box pausing, so the box keeps costing money until
you pause or delete it. `--init-command` is rejected without it:

```bash
box create --no-repl --keep-alive                            # stays up when idle
box create --no-repl --keep-alive --init-command "npm ci"    # startup script
```

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the a5377458d08b7aa4 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
