Walks an MWAA environment to a newer Airflow release, picking the version path and one of three upgrade strategies based on whether run history must survive.

## What it does

This skill from aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws takes your current Airflow version and the target one, then builds an ordered list of jumps. The latest 2.11.x stopover and a Python-line switch appear in that list only when the route needs them. Next the agent picks a strategy from two questions: does the historical run data matter, and must the environment keep its URL and ARN.

Three routes exist. A fresh environment with traffic cut over to it, for when history can go. A rehearsal on a test copy before touching the real one. Or a straight in-place upgrade, which the description itself calls unrecommended. Moves to 3.x add Ruff scanning, log sweeps for deprecation warnings, Docker validation, deployment in batches and a switchover. The plan is saved, so a long upgrade can resume later.

Provisioned Python DAG environments are the target. Serverless YAML workflows and writing new DAGs are out of scope. Each `aws mwaa update-environment` version change needs your confirmation, and `aws mwaa create-environment` waits until you approve the plan. IAM should allow create and update on that specific environment with access to its S3 ARNs; `*FullAccess` policies are ruled out.

Running the commands through the AWS MCP server is optional. It adds sandboxed execution and audit logging. Plain AWS CLI works too.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS, Docker

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill upgrading-mwaa-environments -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/upgrading-mwaa-environments/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/upgrading-mwaa-environments/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill upgrading-mwaa-environments -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/upgrading-mwaa-environments/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill upgrading-mwaa-environments -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/upgrading-mwaa-environments/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws upgrading-mwaa-environments
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/upgrading-mwaa-environments/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill upgrading-mwaa-environments -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path plugins/aws-data-analytics/skills/upgrading-mwaa-environments
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/upgrading-mwaa-environments/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill upgrading-mwaa-environments -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws/tree/HEAD/plugins/aws-data-analytics/skills/upgrading-mwaa-environments/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- map the jump path to a newer Airflow with the 2.11.x stopover
- decide whether run history matters or a fresh environment is fine
- rehearse the upgrade on a test copy before any cutover
- catch calls deprecated in Airflow 3 across your DAGs
- resume a long upgrade from the saved plan

## Example prompts
- Upgrade this MWAA environment to the newest supported Airflow 3 and drop the old run history
- Plan the Airflow 2 to 3 move and rehearse it on a test copy first
- Scan the DAGs for deprecated calls before the version change

  Saves a resumable upgrade plan for multi-session work. Triggers on: upgrade MWAA,
  upgrade Airflow, migrate to Airflow 3, MWAA Airflow 3, Airflow 2 to 3, preserve
  Airflow history, keep same MWAA environment, blue-green cutover, validation
  environment before cutover. Not for authoring new DAGs (authoring-mwaa-workflow),
  debugging unrelated DAG failures (debugging-mwaa-workflow), or MWAA Serverless YAML
  workflows (provisioned Python DAGs only).

# Upgrading MWAA Environments

> **AWS MCP server (optional but recommended):** running the AWS CLI commands in

Upgrade an MWAA provisioned environment to any newer, MWAA-supported Airflow
version: within 2.x, within 3.x, or across the 2.x-to-3.x boundary. The target
is a parameter. A path planner computes an ordered version-jump list from
(source, target); the latest 2.11.x stepping-stone version and a Python-line
transition step are inserted only when the path requires them. A deployment
approach is selected by whether historical run data must be preserved and
whether the same environment (its URL/ARN) must be kept: a new-environment upgrade
