## What it does

The skill runs a structured workflow to bump React Native versions in Community CLI projects. It reads the current version from `package.json`, validates the requested version against releases in `rn-diff-purge`, and downloads the unified diff. Template strings such as `RnDiffApp` and `com.rndiffapp` are replaced with the actual application name and Android package identifier.

Before touching any files, the agent groups changes into direct applies, conflicts, new files, and removals across iOS, Android, and root configurations. It also inspects third-party native libraries like `react-native-screens` or `react-native-reanimated`, bumping their versions if their README contains an explicit compatibility table. If targeting version 0.87 or higher, it accounts for the Strict TypeScript API migration.

The skill intentionally stops short of package installation. It does not execute `npm install`, `yarn install`, or `pod install` on its own. For Expo applications, the official instructions recommend dedicated Expo upgrade tools instead.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add react-native-community/skills --skill upgrade-react-native -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/upgrade-react-native/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/upgrade-react-native/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add react-native-community/skills --skill upgrade-react-native -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/upgrade-react-native/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add react-native-community/skills --skill upgrade-react-native -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/upgrade-react-native/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install react-native-community/skills upgrade-react-native
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/upgrade-react-native/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add react-native-community/skills --skill upgrade-react-native -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/react-native-community/skills --path upgrade-react-native
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/upgrade-react-native/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add react-native-community/skills --skill upgrade-react-native -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/react-native-community/skills/tree/HEAD/upgrade-react-native/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- upgrade a React Native Community CLI project to a specific target version
- apply Android and iOS template diffs mapped to actual project paths
- identify compatible third-party native dependency versions from their documentation
- review a structured migration plan before applying native file changes

## Example prompts
- /upgrade-react-native 0.79.0
- /upgrade-react-native 0.74.0

# Upgrade React Native

Upgrade a React Native Community CLI project to a target version by fetching
and applying the diff from the
[React Native Upgrade Helper](https://react-native-community.github.io/upgrade-helper/).

<!-- LLM_EXCLUDE: Human-only context below -->
> [!Note]
> **Expo users:** For Expo projects or more complex upgrade scenarios, try:
> - [expo/skills/upgrading-expo](https://skills.sh/expo/skills/upgrading-expo)

<!-- /LLM_EXCLUDE -->

## Invocation

```
/upgrade-react-native <targetVersion>
```

- `<targetVersion>` — the React Native version to upgrade to (e.g. `0.79.0`).

## Step-by-step procedure

Follow every step below **in order**. Do not skip steps.

### 1. Detect the current React Native version

Read the project's root `package.json` and extract the `react-native` version
from `dependencies` (or `devDependencies`). Strip any semver range prefix
(`^`, `~`, `>=`, etc.) to get the exact current version string.

If the current version cannot be determined, stop and ask the user.

### 2. Validate the target version

- The target version must be a valid semver string (e.g. `0.79.0`).
- It must be **greater than** the current version.
- Verify the target version exists by checking:
  ```
  https://raw.githubusercontent.com/react-native-community/rn-diff-purge/master/RELEASES
  ```
  Fetch this file and confirm the target version is listed. If not, report the
  closest available versions and ask the user to choose.

### 3. Fetch the upgrade diff

Fetch the unified diff between the two versions:

```
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/react-native-community/rn-diff-purge/diffs/diffs/<currentVersion>..<targetVersion>.diff
```

For example, to upgrade from `0.73.0` to `0.74.0`:

```
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/react-native-community/rn-diff-purge/diffs/diffs/0.73.0..0.74.0.diff
```

If the diff cannot be fetched (404), it may be because exact patch versions are
not available. Try the nearest minor versions (e.g. `0.73.0` instead of
`0.73.2`). Report what you tried and ask the user if needed.

### 4. Parse the diff and map file paths

The diff uses the template project name `RnDiffApp`. Map every path in the diff
to the actual project:

| Diff path prefix | Actual project path |
````
The third-party file has ended. Everything between the e1c49887d3f53e40 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
