# update

Upgrades an existing assistant-ui app to AI SDK v7 and assistant-ui 0.15.x, applying the required migrations. Use it when a package bump breaks types or removes hooks.

## What it does

The skill works in two passes. First it makes the AI SDK and its assistant-ui adapter compatible, then it updates assistant-ui and applies the API migration. The order matters because jumping straight across several versions crosses multiple deprecation windows.

Inside are three reference files: AI SDK v4/v5 to v6 and v6 to v7 changes, assistant-ui 0.8 through 0.15 with toolkits and deprecation policy, and a quick lookup table for versions and symptoms. To detect installed lines it runs `npm ls` and `npm view`, compares the @assistant-ui/react version against thresholds, and picks the migration set.

The CLI command `npx assistant-ui@latest upgrade` runs six codemods in a fixed sequence: edge-package-split, content-part-to-message-part, assistant-api-to-aui, event-names-to-camelcase, primitive-if-to-aui-if, aui-accessor-calls-to-properties. The dry and print form comes first for reviewing the diff.

Do not add the historical v0-8/ui-package-split codemod to a current upgrade: its destination is incompatible with current runtimes. For a new project the skill points to setup, not update.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill update -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/update/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/update/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill update -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/update/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill update -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/update/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install assistant-ui/skills update
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/update/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill update -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/assistant-ui/skills --path assistant-ui/skills/update
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/update/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill update -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/assistant-ui/skills/tree/HEAD/assistant-ui/skills/update/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- move a project from assistant-ui 0.8–0.14 to 0.15.x without hand-tracing deprecations
- migrate AI SDK v4/v5/v6 to ai@^7 and @ai-sdk/react@^4
- fix type errors after a package bump
- find which codemod to run for a given version
- switch imports from @assistant-ui/react-ai-sdk to @assistant-ui/ai-sdk

## Example prompts
- update assistant-ui in this project to 0.15.x
- the upgrade broke some hooks — figure out which migrations I need
- show me what the upgrade command would change before running it

# assistant-ui Update

**Always consult [assistant-ui.com/llms.txt](https://www.assistant-ui.com/llms.txt) for the latest API.**

Upgrade in two passes. First make the AI SDK and its assistant-ui adapter compatible, then update assistant-ui and apply its API migration. Read the relevant references before editing because a direct jump can cross several deprecation windows.

## Detect the installed lines

Run these commands from the application root. npm ls reports the installed dependency graph and npm view reports the published latest version.

```bash
npm ls @assistant-ui/react @assistant-ui/ai-sdk @assistant-ui/react-ai-sdk @assistant-ui/core @assistant-ui/store assistant-stream ai @ai-sdk/react
npm view @assistant-ui/react version
npm view @assistant-ui/ai-sdk version
npm view @assistant-ui/react-ai-sdk version
npm view @assistant-ui/core version
npm view @assistant-ui/store version
npm view assistant-stream version
npm view ai version
npm view @ai-sdk/react version
```

Current published lines as of September 2026:

| Package | Current line |
| --- | --- |
| assistant-ui | 0.0.x |
| @assistant-ui/react | 0.15.x |
| @assistant-ui/ai-sdk | 0.0.x |
| @assistant-ui/react-ai-sdk | 1.4.x |
| @assistant-ui/core | 0.3.x |
| @assistant-ui/store | 0.3.x |
| assistant-stream | 0.3.x |
| assistant-cloud | 0.1.x |
| ai | 7.x |

@assistant-ui/react-ai-sdk re-exports the same API for older installs. New code imports from @assistant-ui/ai-sdk.
