## What it does

The skill lays out all 12 Disney animation principles: squash and stretch, anticipation, staging, follow through, slow in and slow out, arc, secondary action, timing, exaggeration, solid drawing and appeal. Each one comes with a short concept note and concrete implementation steps — how to compress one axis while expanding the other, how much of the duration to spend on a wind-up, which easing curve to reach for.

Inside you'll find a timing table from micro-interactions up to dramatic hero animations, an easing reference (ease-out for entrances, ease-in for exits, ease-in-out for on-screen movement) and a pre-ship checklist. One recommendation worth noting: pose-to-pose for UI work, straight ahead for particles and effects. For interfaces the author suggests starting around 5-15% overshoot rather than full cartoon values.

Nothing here is tied to a specific library. The skill gives principles and numbers, not code for React, CSS or GSAP, so you still translate the advice into your own stack. That's the trade-off: broad coverage, no copy-paste snippets.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dylantarre/animation-principles --skill universal-tool -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/universal-tool/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/universal-tool/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dylantarre/animation-principles --skill universal-tool -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/universal-tool/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dylantarre/animation-principles --skill universal-tool -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/universal-tool/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dylantarre/animation-principles universal-tool
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/universal-tool/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dylantarre/animation-principles --skill universal-tool -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dylantarre/animation-principles --path skills/09-by-tool-framework/universal-tool
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/universal-tool/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dylantarre/animation-principles --skill universal-tool -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- pick a duration and curve for a modal reveal
- delay secondary elements when a card moves
- add a wind-up before a button action
- choose between pose-to-pose and straight ahead for UI
- run a pre-ship check on an animation

## Example prompts
- check my modal animation against the universal-tool principles
- what easing and duration should the card entrance use?
- add anticipation to the button press using the universal-tool skill

# Universal Animation Principles

Apply all 12 Disney animation principles regardless of your tool or framework.

## 1. Squash and Stretch

**Concept**: Objects deform when moving, maintaining volume.

**Implementation**:
- When compressing one axis, expand the other
- `scaleX * scaleY ≈ constant`
- Apply on impact, acceleration, or deceleration

**Values**: Compress to 80%, expand to 120%

## 2. Anticipation

**Concept**: Prepare the audience for an action.

**Implementation**:
- Move opposite to the main action first
- ~20% of total duration for wind-up
- Smaller anticipation for faster actions

**Pattern**: Wind-up → Action → Settle

## 3. Staging

**Concept**: Direct viewer attention to what matters.

**Implementation**:
- Blur or fade background elements
- Scale up the focal point
- Use contrast (color, size, motion)
- One clear action at a time

## 4. Straight Ahead / Pose to Pose

**Straight Ahead**: Animate frame-by-frame sequentially. Good for fluid, organic motion.

**Pose to Pose**: Define key poses, then fill in between. Good for precise, planned motion.

**Recommendation**: Use pose-to-pose for UI, straight ahead for particles/effects.

## 5. Follow Through and Overlapping Action

**Concept**: Different parts move at different rates.

**Implementation**:
- Offset timing of child elements
- Add 2-5 frame delay for secondary elements
- Lighter/looser parts drag behind
- Use easing with different curves per element

## 6. Slow In and Slow Out

**Concept**: Natural motion accelerates and decelerates.

**Implementation**:
- Use ease-in-out for most movements
- Ease-out for entrances (arrives gently)
- Ease-in for exits (leaves naturally)
- Linear only for mechanical motion

**Common curve**: `cubic-bezier(0.42, 0, 0.58, 1)`

## 7. Arc

**Concept**: Natural movement follows curved paths.

**Implementation**:
- Avoid straight-line motion for organic elements
- Use motion paths or multi-point keyframes
- Parabolic arcs for thrown objects
- Pendulum arcs for swings

## 8. Secondary Action

**Concept**: Supporting actions reinforce the main action.

**Implementation**:
- Add subtle movements that complement primary
- Examples: hair bounce, shadow movement, particle effects
- Should not distract from main action
- Slightly delayed from primary

## 9. Timing

**Concept**: Speed conveys weight, mood, and character.

| Duration | Feel | Use Case |
|----------|------|----------|
| 50-150ms | Snappy | Micro-interactions |
