# unit-test-generator

Generates unit test suites using the Arrange-Act-Assert pattern for functions, classes, and React components. Useful when you need test coverage for edge cases and errors.

## What it does

The skill writes unit test suites structured around the Arrange-Act-Assert pattern. It mirrors your existing directory layout. Test cases cover normal execution paths, boundary values, and thrown errors.

It includes templates for plain functions, stateful classes, and React components. For asynchronous routines, the skill stubs `fetch` calls and resets mocks inside `afterEach` hooks. React component tests rely on `@testing-library/react` to inspect DOM output and simulate user clicks.

Because test syntax targets Vitest and Jest, your workspace needs one of those runners installed beforehand. The skill only generates test code and cannot execute tests on its own.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill unit-test-generator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/unit-test-generator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/unit-test-generator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill unit-test-generator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/unit-test-generator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill unit-test-generator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/unit-test-generator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install patricio0312rev/skills unit-test-generator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/unit-test-generator/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill unit-test-generator -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/patricio0312rev/skills --path testing/unit-test-generator
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/unit-test-generator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill unit-test-generator -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- generate unit tests following the Arrange-Act-Assert pattern
- test edge cases and expected exceptions
- mock fetch calls in asynchronous services
- verify class method logic and state changes
- test React component rendering and click events

## Example prompts
- Write unit tests for divide in src/utils/calculator.ts covering division by zero.
- Generate tests for Counter.tsx verifying initial render and button clicks.
- Create tests for fetchUser in src/services/userService.ts mocking network responses.

# Unit Test Generator

Generate comprehensive unit tests with edge cases and AAA pattern.

## AAA Pattern Template

```typescript
// tests/utils/validator.test.ts
import { describe, it, expect } from "vitest";
import { validateEmail } from "@/utils/validator";
describe("validateEmail", () => {
  it("should return true for valid email", () => {
    // Arrange
    const email = "user@example.com";
    // Act
    const result = validateEmail(email);
    // Assert
    expect(result).toBe(true);
  });
  it("should return false for invalid email - missing @", () => {
    // Arrange
    const email = "userexample.com";
    // Act
    const result = validateEmail(email);
    // Assert
    expect(result).toBe(false);
  });
  it("should return false for invalid email - missing domain", () => {
    // Arrange
    const email = "user@";
    // Act
    const result = validateEmail(email);
    // Assert
    expect(result).toBe(false);
  });
});
```

## Comprehensive Test Cases

```typescript
// src/utils/calculator.ts
export function divide(a: number, b: number): number {
  if (b === 0) {
    throw new Error("Division by zero");
  }
  return a / b;
}
// tests/utils/calculator.test.ts
describe("divide", () => {
  describe("happy path", () => {
    it("should divide positive numbers", () => {
      expect(divide(10, 2)).toBe(5);
    });
    it("should divide negative numbers", () => {
      expect(divide(-10, 2)).toBe(-5);
      expect(divide(10, -2)).toBe(-5);
      expect(divide(-10, -2)).toBe(5);
    });
    it("should handle decimal results", () => {
      expect(divide(10, 3)).toBeCloseTo(3.333, 3);
    });
  });
  describe("edge cases", () => {
    it("should handle zero dividend", () => {
      expect(divide(0, 5)).toBe(0);
    });
    it("should handle very large numbers", () => {
      expect(divide(Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER, 2)).toBe(
        Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER / 2
      );
    });
    it("should handle very small numbers", () => {
      expect(divide(0.0001, 0.0001)).toBe(1);
    });
  });
  describe("error cases", () => {
    it("should throw error when dividing by zero", () => {
      expect(() => divide(10, 0)).toThrow("Division by zero");
    });
    it("should throw error when dividing by negative zero", () => {
      expect(() => divide(10, -0)).toThrow("Division by zero");
    });
  });
});
```

## Async Function Testing

```typescript
// src/services/userService.ts
export async function fetchUser(id: string): Promise<User> {
  const response = await fetch(`/api/users/${id}`);
  if (!response.ok) {
    throw new Error(`User not found: ${id}`);
