## What it does

This skill covers unit tests for Spring Boot exception handlers. It ships worked examples: a `@ControllerAdvice` class handling `ResourceNotFoundException`, `ValidationException` and `MethodArgumentNotValidException`, error DTOs, and a test controller that throws those exceptions on purpose.

The flow is short. A test controller throws the exception, `MockMvcBuilders.standaloneSetup()` builds MockMvc, and `setControllerAdvice()` wires in your handler. Then you assert the status with `status().isNotFound()`, the response fields with `jsonPath("$.status")`, and each validation message by field name. No full Spring context needed.

When a test fails and the handler looks untouched, it is usually a missing `setControllerAdvice()` call or an exception type that does not match. Another regular: status 200 instead of 404 because the method has no `@ResponseStatus`. Chain `.andDo(print())` to see the actual response shape. The skill advises asserting every field in the error body, not just the code.

Specificity is the trap worth knowing. More specific exception types match first, and `Exception.class` catches everything left over, so `@Order` matters when handlers overlap. Handlers that log get checked with `verify(mockLogger)`, and `MessageSource` tests should run against different `Locale` values.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill unit-test-exception-handler -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/unit-test-exception-handler/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/unit-test-exception-handler/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill unit-test-exception-handler -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/unit-test-exception-handler/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill unit-test-exception-handler -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/unit-test-exception-handler/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit unit-test-exception-handler
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/unit-test-exception-handler/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill unit-test-exception-handler -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --path plugins/developer-kit-java/skills/unit-test-exception-handler
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/unit-test-exception-handler/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill unit-test-exception-handler -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- check that a handler returns 404 for a missing resource
- verify validation errors arrive per field
- build MockMvc without booting the full Spring context
- debug why `@ExceptionHandler` never fires in a test
- assert that a handler logs what it should

## Example prompts
- write a unit test for the `@ControllerAdvice` handling `ResourceNotFoundException`
- assert with MockMvc that an invalid email returns 400 and an error on the `email` field
- add `.andDo(print())` to the failing handler test and show me the response

# Unit Testing ExceptionHandler and ControllerAdvice

## Overview

This skill provides patterns for writing unit tests for Spring Boot exception handlers. It covers testing `@ExceptionHandler` methods in `@ControllerAdvice` classes using MockMvc, including HTTP status assertions, JSON response validation, field-level validation error testing, and mocking handler dependencies.

## When to Use

- Writing unit tests for `@ExceptionHandler` methods
- Testing `@ControllerAdvice` global exception handling
- Validating REST API error response formatting
- Mocking exceptions in controller tests
- Testing field-level validation error responses
- Asserting custom error payloads and HTTP status codes

## Instructions

1. **Create a test controller** that throws specific exceptions to trigger each `@ExceptionHandler`
2. **Register ControllerAdvice** via `setControllerAdvice()` on `MockMvcBuilders.standaloneSetup()`
3. **Assert HTTP status codes** with `.andExpect(status().isXxx())`
4. **Verify error response fields** using `jsonPath("$.field")` matchers
5. **Test validation errors** by sending invalid payloads and checking `MethodArgumentNotValidException` produces field-level details
6. **Debug failures** with `.andDo(print())` — if handler not invoked, verify `setControllerAdvice()` is called and exception type matches

## Examples

### Exception Handler and Error DTO

```java
@ControllerAdvice
public class GlobalExceptionHandler {
  @ExceptionHandler(ResourceNotFoundException.class)
````
