## What it does

The skill implements a formula for fiction and script outlines: Outcasts + Impossible Mandate + Severe Constraints = Narrative Tension. It structures story development across four main blocks: mandate category, resource limits, character archetypes, and leadership stance. Mandates range from cold cases and jurisdictional fights to emerging technological threats.

Character generation relies on eight outcast archetypes, including the disgraced expert, the rule-breaker, the burnout, and the whistleblower. The skill covers team formation models such as accidental groupings or disciplinary assignments. It also maps escalation paths. Stakes climb steadily from individual job security to whole-system failure.

The skill supplies structured narrative blueprints rather than finished prose, so dialogue and scene pacing remain in your hands. It provides five formula variations, from redemption arcs to expendable operations. Writers also get naming conventions for units, spanning bureaucratic acronyms and dry room numbers.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill underdog-unit -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/underdog-unit/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/underdog-unit/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill underdog-unit -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/underdog-unit/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill underdog-unit -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/underdog-unit/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jwynia/agent-skills underdog-unit
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/underdog-unit/SKILL.md`

## When to use it
- Outline an outcast unit dealing with heavy budget cuts and zero authority
- Pick complementary character archetypes for interpersonal friction
- Escalate narrative stakes from personal threats to systemic crises
- Structure institutional conflict against hostile or indifferent leadership

## Example prompts
- Apply underdog-unit to draft a three-person police team handling an experimental biotech case.
- Use underdog-unit with the Last Chance Saloon variation to outline a cold case mystery.
- Generate four resource constraints and a hostile leadership dynamic using underdog-unit.

# Underdog Unit: Narrative Formula Skill

You help writers create stories using the "Underdog Unit" formula: institutional outcasts given impossible mandates with minimal resources, creating pressure cookers for character development and creative problem-solving.

## Core Formula

**Outcasts + Impossible Mandate + Severe Constraints = Narrative Tension**

The power lies in:
- Forcing creative solutions through limitation
- Building team bonds through shared adversity
- Creating David vs. Goliath dynamics within institutions

## The Four Core Elements

### 1. The Mandate (Mission Type)

| Mandate Type | Enemy | Examples |
|--------------|-------|----------|
| Cold Cases | Time | Old evidence, faded memories, dead witnesses |
| Impossible/Unsolvable | Complexity | Cases that stumped the best |
| Cross-Jurisdictional | Bureaucracy | Navigating multiple systems |
| Internal Affairs | Institution | Investigating their own |
| Experimental/New Threats | The Unknown | Cyber, biotech, emerging crimes |
| PR Disasters | Perception | High-profile failures |
| Political Hot Potatoes | Politics | Cases no one wants |
| Reject Pile | Apathy | Cases deemed unimportant |

### 2. The Constraints (Resource Limitations)

**Physical Space**: Basement storage, abandoned wings, trailers, repurposed areas

**Budget**: Shoestring, self-funded, borrowed, scavenged, barter economy

**Personnel**: Skeleton crew, part-time, borrowed, probationary, volunteers

**Authority**: Limited jurisdiction, advisory only, unofficial, no arrest powers

**Time**: Sunset clause, probationary period, case-by-case renewal

**Technology**: Outdated, no database access, analog only, DIY solutions

**Political**: No leadership support, active sabotage, scapegoat status

### 3. The Team Composition (Outcast Archetypes)

| Archetype | Description | Story Function |
|-----------|-------------|----------------|
| The Disgraced Expert | Former star with catastrophic failure | Seeking redemption |
| The Rule-Breaker | Gets results through unorthodox methods | Values justice over procedure |
| The Burnout | Lost faith in the system | Rediscovers purpose |
```
