## What it does

The skill runs in three modes. Review walks a pass/fail checklist and points to the matching guideline for every failure. Improve swaps deprecated patterns for their modern replacements. Implement new lays out an order of work: data flow and dependencies first, then lifecycle, Auto Layout, collection views, navigation, animation and memory.

Behind it sits a set of reference files under `references/`, one per topic — lifecycle, Auto Layout, modern collection views, cell configuration, navigation, animation, memory management. The agent pulls the file it needs. The rules are concrete: `translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false` on programmatic views, constraints activated in one `NSLayoutConstraint.activate([])` batch, `UICollectionViewDiffableDataSource` keyed by stable identifiers, `CellRegistration` instead of string identifiers, `[weak self]` in escaping closures.

Architecture is left alone on purpose: no MVVM, VIPER or coordinator mandate, though separating business logic for testability is encouraged. SwiftUI-only code is out of scope; the UIKit–SwiftUI seam is not. iOS 26+ features should sit behind an `#available` check with a fallback. On a pure SwiftUI project there is nothing here for you.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ivan-magda/uikit-expert-skill --skill uikit-expert -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/uikit-expert/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/uikit-expert/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ivan-magda/uikit-expert-skill --skill uikit-expert -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/uikit-expert/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ivan-magda/uikit-expert-skill --skill uikit-expert -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/uikit-expert/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install ivan-magda/uikit-expert-skill uikit-expert
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/uikit-expert/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ivan-magda/uikit-expert-skill --skill uikit-expert -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/ivan-magda/uikit-expert-skill --path uikit-expert
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/uikit-expert/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ivan-magda/uikit-expert-skill --skill uikit-expert -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/ivan-magda/uikit-expert-skill/tree/HEAD/uikit-expert/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- split one-time setup and geometry work between `viewDidLoad` and `viewIsAppearing`
- move a list onto diffable data sources and compositional layout
- stop constraint churn and layout jumps inside reusable cells
- configure all four `UINavigationBarAppearance` slots and guard concurrent transitions
- track down leaks in timers, closures and notification observers

## Example prompts
- Review `ProfileViewController.swift` against the skill checklist and flag lifecycle and memory failures
- Convert `FeedViewController` to `UICollectionViewDiffableDataSource` with a `UICollectionViewCompositionalLayout`
- Find why the layout jumps while scrolling in `PhotoCell.swift` and fix it per the Auto Layout guidelines

# UIKit Expert Skill

## Overview
Favor native APIs and Apple's documented guidance. Operating principles: facts over architecture (no MVVM/VIPER/Coordinator mandates, but do separate business logic for testability); correctness first, then performance; reserve "always"/"never" for correctness, use "suggest"/"consider" for optional optimizations.

## Workflows

All three modes draw on the same **Core Guidelines** below; each topic links to its reference file there. Pick the entry point:

- **Review** — Walk the **Review Checklist** as pass/fail gates. For any failure, fix per the matching Core Guideline. Prioritize correctness gates (lifecycle, Auto Layout, memory, concurrency) over style; treat performance items as optional.
- **Improve** — For each issue, apply the modern replacement from the **Deprecated → Modern** table and the matching Core Guideline. Present performance work (downsampling, prefetching, constraint-churn fixes) as optional optimizations, never mandates.
- **Implement new** — Build in this order, applying the relevant Core Guideline at each step:
  1. Design data flow — owned state, injected dependencies, model layer
  2. Lifecycle — one-time setup in `viewDidLoad`, geometry in `viewIsAppearing`
  3. Auto Layout — batch activation, zero churn
  4. Collection views — DiffableDataSource + CompositionalLayout + CellRegistration
  5. Navigation — all 4 appearance slots, concurrent-transition guards
  6. Animation, memory (`[weak self]`, Task cancellation), concurrency (`@MainActor`)
  7. Interop, image loading, keyboard, Dynamic Type / VoiceOver / dark mode
  8. Gate iOS 26+ features with `#available` and sensible fallbacks
