# ui5-typescript-conversion

A skill that walks a SAPUI5 or OpenUI5 project through a TypeScript conversion: build setup, types, then the code itself. Useful when a JS project needs typing.

## What it does

The skill gives the agent an order of operations for moving a UI5 project to TypeScript. It starts in `package.json`, adding dev dependencies plus `@sapui5/types` or `@openui5/types` at a version matching the project. The framework version comes from `ui5.yaml` or the `get_project_info` MCP tool. A `ts-typecheck` script running `tsc --noEmit` gets added too, so type errors surface early.

Next comes a `tsconfig.json` with a paths map adapted to the project layout, and `ui5.yaml` gets `ui5-tooling-transpile-task` and `ui5-tooling-transpile-middleware`. If eslint is already set up, the config gains `typescript-eslint` rules; without eslint that step is skipped. Conversion runs step by step — setup first, then the central files other files depend on. Setting `"allowJs": true` lets a half-converted project still run.

The rules are strict. JSDoc and comments must survive the rewrite, and `any` or casts through `unknown` are discouraged in favour of real control types, like importing `SimpleForm` from `sap/ui/layout/form/SimpleForm`. The agent checks the XMLView to learn what `this.byId(...)` actually returns. Shared types go into one place such as `src/types/`. If dependencies changed, run `npm install` or `yarn install` yourself — the skill does not do it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill ui5-typescript-conversion -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ui5-typescript-conversion/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ui5-typescript-conversion/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill ui5-typescript-conversion -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ui5-typescript-conversion/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill ui5-typescript-conversion -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ui5-typescript-conversion/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install cline/skills ui5-typescript-conversion
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ui5-typescript-conversion/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill ui5-typescript-conversion -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/cline/skills --path skills/ui5-typescript-conversion
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ui5-typescript-conversion/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill ui5-typescript-conversion -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- convert SAPUI5 controllers and views to TypeScript without losing types
- set up `tsconfig.json` and `ui5.yaml` for transpilation
- pick the real control type instead of `any` or an `unknown` cast
- keep JSDoc and comments intact through the rewrite
- collect repeated type definitions in one shared file

## Example prompts
- Convert this UI5 project to TypeScript, start with the build setup
- Replace the `any` here with the proper control type, check the XMLView
- Add `@sapui5/types` to dev dependencies and a `ts-typecheck` script

# UI5 TypeScript Conversion Guidelines

> This document outlines how a UI5 (SAPUI5/OpenUI5) project can be converted to TypeScript. It consists of the following parts:
> 1. Important general rules
> 2. How the setup of the project needs to be changed
> 3. Converting the code itself
> 4. Converting tests (reference to separate file)

## General Conversion Rules

### Preserve ALL comments

You MUST preserve existing JSDoc, documentation and comments - never remove JSDoc or comments during the conversion.

Example input:

```js
/**
 * My cool controller, it does things.
 */
return Controller.extend("com.myorg.myapp.controller.BaseController", {
    /**
     * Convenience method for accessing the component of the controller's view.
     * @returns {sap.ui.core.Component} The component of the controller's view
     */
    getOwnerComponent: function () {
        // comment
        return Controller.prototype.getOwnerComponent.call(this);
    },
    ...
});
```

Wrong output:

```ts
export default class BaseController extends Controller {
    public getOwnerComponent(): UIComponent {
        return super.getOwnerComponent() as UIComponent;
    }
}
```

Correct output:

```ts
/**
 * My cool controller, it does things.
 * @namespace com.myorg.myapp.controller
 */
export default class BaseController extends Controller {
    /**
     * Convenience method for accessing the component of the controller's view.
     * @returns {sap.ui.core.Component} The component of the controller's view
     */
    public getOwnerComponent(): UIComponent {
        // comment
        return super.getOwnerComponent() as UIComponent;
    }
}
```
