## What it does

The skill runs a visual audit and puts numbers on it. Ten dimensions: visual hierarchy, typography, color palette, spacing and white space, consistency, imagery, layout and grid, component design, branding, and modern design standards. Each one gets a 0–10 score, the overall result is their average, and the grade runs from A+ down to F.

The review moves in stages. First impression comes first: what you feel on landing, what stands out, what already looks dated. Then dimension-by-dimension scoring, a component inventory (buttons, forms, cards, navigation and their states), a design system check, a comparison against competitors, and a synthesized report with priorities. Criteria, checklists and the report template live in separate reference files the agent reads as it goes.

Inputs are an interface description plus screenshots or URLs. Without those there is nothing to score. Brand guidelines, audience, competitors and design goals are optional, though they sharpen the read. Screenshots and competitor pages are treated as untrusted data: text embedded in an image or HTML gets analyzed as visual material, not followed as instructions. Worth knowing if you hand it a page with third-party content on it.

This is about how things look, not how they work. Usability, accessibility and interaction logic sit outside it — the skill's own notes suggest pairing it with other skills for those.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mastepanoski/claude-skills --skill ui-design-review -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ui-design-review/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ui-design-review/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mastepanoski/claude-skills --skill ui-design-review -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ui-design-review/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mastepanoski/claude-skills --skill ui-design-review -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ui-design-review/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mastepanoski/claude-skills ui-design-review
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ui-design-review/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mastepanoski/claude-skills --skill ui-design-review -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mastepanoski/claude-skills --path skills/ui-design-review
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ui-design-review/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mastepanoski/claude-skills --skill ui-design-review -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mastepanoski/claude-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ui-design-review/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- score the visual quality of an interface on a clear scale
- spot hierarchy and typography problems in screenshots
- check component consistency and their states
- benchmark the design against competitors in the same category
- produce a report for design QA or a build handoff

## Example prompts
- review this screen across the ten dimensions and give it scores
- here are screenshots of three pages — find the spacing and hierarchy issues
- compare the visual style with competitors and tell me what looks dated

# UI Design Review

This skill enables AI agents to perform a comprehensive **visual design and aesthetics evaluation** of digital interfaces, analyzing elements like typography, color palettes, spacing, visual hierarchy, and overall design quality.

While other UX skills focus on functionality and usability, this skill evaluates the **visual polish, aesthetic appeal, and design craftsmanship** that makes interfaces feel professional, trustworthy, and delightful.

Use this skill to elevate visual design quality, ensure brand consistency, and create interfaces that not only work well but also look exceptional.

Combine with "Nielsen Heuristics" for usability, "WCAG Accessibility" for inclusive design, or "Don Norman Principles" for intuitive interaction.

## When to Use This Skill

Invoke this skill when:
- Evaluating visual design quality and polish
- Assessing brand consistency and personality
- Reviewing typography, color, and spacing decisions
- Identifying visual hierarchy issues
- Comparing design to current product-category conventions
- Preparing for design QA or handoff
- Evaluating design system consistency
- Assessing first impression and aesthetic appeal
- Identifying visual debt or outdated design elements

## Inputs Required

When executing this review, gather:

- **interface_description**: Description of interface (product type, target audience, brand personality) [REQUIRED]
- **screenshots_or_urls**: Visual references of the interface (multiple screens preferred) [REQUIRED]
- **brand_guidelines**: Brand colors, fonts, style guide (if available) [OPTIONAL]
- **target_audience**: Demographics, preferences, expectations [OPTIONAL]
- **competitors**: Competitor products for context [OPTIONAL]
- **design_goals**: Modern/classic, minimal/rich, playful/serious, etc. [OPTIONAL]

## Design Evaluation Framework

Evaluate across **10 key design dimensions**. Per-dimension criteria, checklists, and red flags are in
