## What it does

The skill hands the agent a map of the relevant API for how a `UWorld` is put together and swapped at runtime: World Partition grids, data layers, HLOD, level instances, classic sub-levels and streaming volumes, plus travel between maps. Ask for a fix in that area and the agent goes to the right section instead of guessing. A comparison table covers the choice of streaming model, from one big continuous map to a wholly separate level.

Some setups clash, and the skill says so: World Partition and sub-level streaming cannot both drive the same persistent level, and `UWorld::IsPartitionedWorld()` tells you which one is active. Header locations are given for the checks that matter, such as `UWorldPartitionSubsystem::IsAllStreamingCompleted()` and the `Unloaded`, `Loaded`, `Activated` cell states, so the agent queries readiness rather than polling actors in a loop.

Everything covered lives in the `Engine` module, which means `Core`, `CoreUObject` and `Engine` in `PublicDependencyModuleNames` are enough. The single exception, Level Streaming Persistence, adds the `LevelStreamingPersistence` module. Target is UE 5.8: older call forms sit in a deprecated list, so on earlier engine builds the signatures may not line up with your headers. Neighbouring subjects — replication, game mode callbacks, saving world state — point to other skills in the same set.

## Requirements
- Works with: Unreal Engine

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-world-level-streaming -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ue-world-level-streaming/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ue-world-level-streaming/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-world-level-streaming -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ue-world-level-streaming/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-world-level-streaming -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ue-world-level-streaming/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills ue-world-level-streaming
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ue-world-level-streaming/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-world-level-streaming -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --path skills/ue-world-level-streaming
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ue-world-level-streaming/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-world-level-streaming -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ue-world-level-streaming/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick between World Partition and sub-levels for a given map
- set up grid streaming and streaming sources in an open world
- toggle optional content with data layers without reloading the map
- load and unload a sub-level or level instance from code
- move players to another map with `OpenLevel` or `ServerTravel`

## Example prompts
- Set up World Partition for an open world map and add a streaming source on the player
- I want to switch a dungeon on and off with a data layer — show me how to change its runtime state
- Load the `Boss_Arena` sub-level and unload it once the fight ends

# UE World & Level Streaming

Target engine: **UE 5.8**. APIs below are verified against the 5.8 headers; older forms are listed under "Deprecated — do not use".

This skill covers how a `UWorld` is composed and swapped at runtime: World Partition grids, data layers, HLOD, level instances, classic sub-level streaming, streaming volumes, and map travel. Everything here lives in the `Engine` module (`Engine/Source/Runtime/Engine`), so `Core`, `CoreUObject` and `Engine` in `PublicDependencyModuleNames` is all that is needed. The one exception is the Level Streaming Persistence plugin, which adds the `LevelStreamingPersistence` module.

For end-to-end configurations per game type (open world, hub-and-spoke, procedural, chapter-based, volume-driven, dedicated server), see [streaming patterns](references/streaming-patterns.md).

## Context

Read `.agents/ue-project-context.md` if it exists (module names, conventions, enabled plugins, GAS/networking setup). Do not stop if it is missing.

Identify the area from the request and the codebase. Ask only when two plausible readings would produce different code.
