## What it does

The skill covers four areas at once: logging, assertions, testing and profiling. A routing table maps each request to the right section, so the agent opens the piece it needs instead of restating the whole manual: log categories and verbosity, `UE_LOGFMT`, `check` and `ensure`, automation tests, `CQTest`, `AFunctionalTest`, Insights and `stat`. Console commands and CVars get their own section.

The target engine is UE 5.8, the APIs are checked against the 5.8 headers, and older forms sit in a separate do-not-use list. The skill first reads `.agents/ue-project-context.md` if the project has one, and keeps going when it does not. There is a note about builds: in `Test` and `Shipping` the `NO_LOGGING` macro is on, so every non-fatal log call disappears along with its arguments. If you want logs in shipping, set `bUseLoggingInShipping = true;` in `MyGame.Target.cs` — worth checking your target settings before hunting for missing messages.

Neighbouring topics live in other skills from the same repository: module and target wiring in `ue-module-build-system`, editor tooling in `ue-editor-tools`. It makes sense if your project runs on Unreal and you already point an agent at engine code.

## Requirements
- Works with: Unreal Engine

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-testing-debugging -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ue-testing-debugging/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ue-testing-debugging/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-testing-debugging -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ue-testing-debugging/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-testing-debugging -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ue-testing-debugging/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills ue-testing-debugging
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ue-testing-debugging/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-testing-debugging -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --path skills/ue-testing-debugging
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ue-testing-debugging/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills --skill ue-testing-debugging -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/quodsoler/unreal-engine-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ue-testing-debugging/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- declare a log category and set its verbosity
- switch `%s` placeholders to named fields in `UE_LOGFMT`
- pick between `check`, `ensure` and a plain `if`
- write an automation test with `IMPLEMENT_SIMPLE_AUTOMATION_TEST`
- track down bad frame time with `stat unit` and Insights

## Example prompts
- Add a log category for the inventory and raise it to Verbose on startup
- Why did all my UE_LOG messages vanish in shipping?
- Write an automation test for save loading and show me how to run it

# UE Testing, Logging & Profiling

Target engine: **UE 5.8**. APIs below are verified against the 5.8 headers; older forms are listed under "Deprecated — do not use".

This skill owns logging, assertions, automation/functional testing, console commands and performance profiling for the repo. Logging, assertions, stats, trace and CVars live in `Core` (`Logging/`, `Misc/AssertionMacros.h`, `Stats/Stats.h`, `ProfilingDebugging/`, `HAL/IConsoleManager.h`). Debug drawing, the Visual Logger and `AHUD::ShowDebug` live in `Engine`. Test frameworks are the developer modules `AutomationController`, `CQTest`, `FunctionalTesting` and `AutomationDriver`; the Gameplay Debugger is the runtime module `GameplayDebugger`.

## Context

Read `.agents/ue-project-context.md` if it exists (module names, conventions, enabled plugins, GAS/networking setup). Do not stop if it is missing. Identify the area from the request and the codebase; ask only when two plausible readings would produce different code.

| Request is about… | Go to |
|---|---|
| `UE_LOG`, categories, verbosity, structured logging | [Logging](#logging) |
| `check`, `ensure`, `verify`, crash on bad state | [Assertions](#assertions) |
| Unit tests, `IMPLEMENT_SIMPLE_AUTOMATION_TEST`, specs, latent commands | [Automation Tests](#automation-tests) |
| `TEST_CLASS`, `ASSERT_THAT`, fixture-style tests | [CQTest](#cqtest) |
| Tests placed in a map, `AFunctionalTest` | [Functional Tests](#functional-tests) |
